Clay mineralogy fingerprinting of loess-mantled soils on different underlying substrates in the south-western Poland

Joanna Beata Kowalska et al.

Summary: Loess, when integrated into slope deposits, can affect the physical, chemical, and mineralogical properties of the soil. This study aimed to investigate the origin of phyllosilicates in soils covered by loess, determine the influence of geological substrate and loess deposits on clay mineral transformation, and relate clay mineralogical traits to soil morphology. The results showed that loess deposits consisted of various minerals and could be traced to long-distance and local aeolian sources.

Clay mineralogy of soils developed from Miocene marls of Medvednica Mt., NW Croatia: Origin and transformation in temperate climate

Zvonka Gveric et al.

Summary: The clay mineralogy of five young soil profiles formed from Miocene marls and argillaceous limestone was investigated. The results showed slight changes in clay mineralogy, including a decrease in illite layers, the presence of mixed-layered chlorite-vermiculite, and the occurrence of hydroxyl or organic matter interlayering. These changes can modify soil properties and serve as indicators of subtle clay transformation in calcareous soils under temperate climate conditions.

Predictive soil mapping using historic bare soil composite imagery and legacy soil survey data

P. T. Sorenson et al.

Summary: There is an increasing need for detailed soil property maps to support various applications in the Canadian Prairies. This study used bare soil composite imagery and historical soil data to predict soil organic carbon, clay, and cation exchange capacity, with valuable results indicating the importance of bare soil composite imagery for predictive soil mapping.

Carbon sequestration of forest soils is reflected by changes in physicochemical soil indicators - A comprehensive discussion of a long-term experiment on a detritus manipulation

Katalin Juhos et al.

Summary: The long-term detritus manipulation study in a Central-European forest site revealed significant impact of detritus input treatments on soil organic carbon and almost all soil physicochemical indicators within the upper 15 cm layer. This site is unique due to its high clay content and dry climate, suggesting the importance of potential cation exchange capacity and base saturation in predicting carbon sequestration mechanisms. It is recommended to include these parameters in current soil organic carbon models.

Control of climate on soil charge characteristics through organic matter and clay mineral distributions in volcanic soils of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Han Lyu et al.

Summary: The study showed that the contribution of variable charge to CEC was high in humid sites on the southeast slope, while constant and variable charge contributed equally in dry sites on the northwest slope and low elevations of the southeast slope. Moisture and temperature both play important roles in influencing organic matter distribution and crystalline clay minerals, which in turn impact soil charge characteristics in weakly weathered volcanic soils in relatively dry regions.
