Topology-optimized bulk metallic glass cellular materials for energy absorption

Josephine Carstensen et al.

Summary: Topology optimization is used to design porous cellular materials with extreme elastic properties, aiming to maximize energy absorption capacity until local failure occurs. By optimizing designs and fabricating with different base materials, such as bulk metallic glasses, superior energy absorption is achieved through combinations of buckling and yielding mechanisms. Further research on different materials offer potential directions to improve post-peak responses of topology-optimized cellular materials.

Nanosecond pulsed laser-induced formation of nanopattern on Fe-based metallic glass surface

Yongfeng Qian et al.

Summary: Fe-based metallic glasses with micro/nano-structures were fabricated on the surface by nanosecond pulsed laser irradiation technology, resulting in distinguished microstructures such as nanoparticles and network nanostructures. The formation mechanisms of these structures were attributed to laser-induced element enrichment and diffusion and connection of nanoparticles under the combined influence of recoil pressure and surface topography.

Controllable additive manufacturing of gradient bulk metallic glass composite with high strength and tensile ductility

Yunzhuo Lu et al.

Summary: Using laser additive manufacturing, a multi-layered Zr-based BMGC with gradient distribution of crystalline dendrites was fabricated, leading to exceptional combination of yield strength and tensile ductility. This synergy is attributed to the interaction of adjacent layers and the asynchronous deformation mode associated with the heterogeneous microstructure, showing promise for high-performance BMGCs for structural applications.

Hybrid processing of bearing steel by combining Direct Laser Interference Patterning and laser hardening for wear resistance applications

Mikhael El-Khoury et al.

Summary: In this study, a hybrid process was proposed to increase the hardness and wear resistance of laser-generated surface textures through a laser heat treatment. The process involved Direct Laser Interference Patterning to create well-defined periodic surface features on bearing steel, followed by a laser-hardening process. The hybrid approach resulted in significantly improved wear resistance of the surface patterns in harsh environments.

In vitro cytocompatibility of a Zr-based metallic glass modified by laser surface texturing for potential implant applications

Yang Jiao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the feasibility of using nanosecond laser surface texturing to modify the cytocompatibility of a Zr-based BMG material, with grooved surfaces showing higher cell viability and better adhesion. The improved cytocompatibility of the groove-textured sample was attributed to higher surface roughness, increased presence of metallic oxides, and enhanced hydrophilicity.
