Effect of grain size on strength and strain rate sensitivity in metals

Roberto B. Figueiredo et al.

Summary: The effect of grain size on the mechanical properties of metallic materials has been studied. A physically based model for grain boundary sliding is proposed to predict the flow stress for plastic deformation. The model shows good agreement with experimental data and successfully predicts the enhanced strain rate sensitivity in ultrafine and nanocrystalline materials.

The role of grain boundary sliding and intragranular deformation mechanisms for a steady stage of superplastic flow for Al-Mg-based alloys

A. Mikhaylovskaya et al.

Summary: The superplastic forming technique is used for producing complex shaped lightweight constructions by achieving extremely high plastic deformation mainly through grain boundary sliding. Studies have shown that fine-grained commercial Al-Mg based alloys exhibit unusually weak grain boundary sliding and increased contributions of accommodation mechanisms during the initial stage of superplastic deformation.

Microstructural Evolution and Tensile Testing of a Bi-Sn (57/43) Alloy Processed by Tube High-Pressure Shearing

Chuan-Ting Wang et al.

Summary: Tube high-pressure shearing (t-HPS) processing was conducted on a eutectic Bi-Sn (57/43) alloy for different number of turns. The study found that t-HPS processing refined the microstructure, decreased microhardness, and led to an increase in microhardness after subsequent storage at room temperature. The processed alloy exhibited significantly enhanced superplastic properties, with elongations exceeding 1800% due to the breaking of lamellar structure and very small grain size.
