Which types of online resource support US patent claims?

Cristina I. Font-Julian et al.

Summary: The study found that most patents include URLs, with Physics (especially the subcategory Computation) having the most URLs per patent. Patents are generally embedded in the other citations patent section (referring to academic publications) and the description section (e.g., supplementary information and definitions). USPTO patents often link to online content resources (e.g., Wayback Machine, Wikipedia, YouTube), academic bibliographic databases (e.g., IEEE Xplore, Microsoft Academic, PubMed, CiteSeerX) and technological companies (e.g., IBM, Amazon, Microsoft).

Are link-based and citation-based journal metrics correlated? An Open Access megapublisher case study

Enrique Orduna-Malea et al.

Summary: This article analyzes the current value of link counts as supplementary measures of the formal quality and impact of journals, using MDPI as a case study. The results show that link-based indicators mainly reflect the quality, size, and impact of MDPI journals, with more links found in journals covering multiple subjects. However, there is no statistically significant difference between subject categories, which may be attributed to the effect of MDPI's series titles.

Dot-science top level domain: Academic websites or dumpsites?

Enrique Orduna-Malea

Summary: The dot-science top-level domain was launched in 2015 to provide a dedicated location for global Internet users interested in science. Research findings show that this domain is mainly used by registrar companies for reselling purposes, with limited adoption by the academic community. Websites receiving the highest number of backlinks are generally non-academic sites applying intensive link building practices.

A large-scale comparison of coverage and mentions captured by the two altmetric aggregators: Altmetric.com and PlumX

Mousumi Karmakar et al.

Summary: The increased attention of scholarly articles on social media has led to the emergence of altmetric aggregators like Altmetric.com and PlumX, which track activity and events in social media and academic social networks. These platforms provide researchers with coverage and mention data across different platforms, but they differ in terms of range and quantity of mentions captured.

The methodological quality of 176,620 randomized controlled trials published between 1966 and 2018 reveals a positive trend but also an urgent need for improvement

Christiaan H. Vinkers et al.

Summary: The likelihood of bias in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) has decreased over the past decades as trial registration and CONSORT Statement reporting have increased. However, relatively high probabilities of bias still remain, particularly in journals with lower impact factors, emphasizing the continued need for improvement in RCT registration, conduct, and reporting.

Summary: The CONSERVE guideline, developed as a joint extension for CONSORT and SPIRIT reporting guidelines, aims to improve the reporting of trial protocols and completed trials that undergo important modifications in response to extenuating circumstances. The guideline was developed through an accelerated, iterative process involving multiple rounds of meetings, surveys, and feedback from trial stakeholders globally. Professionals from 34 countries participated in the survey, with high levels of understanding and acceptance of the core concepts and implementation tool of the guideline.

CONSORT Abstract Item Reporting Quality and Altmetrics in the Cardiovascular Core Clinical Journals

Fahimeh Farrokhzadeh et al.

Summary: The study examined the reporting quality of CONSORT abstract items in cardiovascular articles published in core clinical journals and its correlation with altmetrics scores. Results showed that abstracts with higher reporting quality tended to receive higher altmetrics scores, indicating increased attention from researchers and the public. Conducting training for researchers and reviewers and encouraging journal editors to follow checklist items may improve abstract reporting quality and altmetrics scores.
