Non-Destructive Measurement of the Internal Quality of Citrus Fruits Using a Portable NIR Device

Carla S. P. Santos et al.

Summary: A portable near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) sensor combined with chemometrics was used to develop models for predicting citrus fruit ripeness and vitamin C content. The study successfully determined ascorbic acid, dehydroascorbic acid, and total vitamin C using HILIC-HPLC-UV, while also evaluating soluble solids and total acidity. The prediction models showed good to excellent performance, with oranges and Tahiti limes displaying particularly strong results.

Application of nearinfra-redspectroscopy as an instantaneous and simultaneous prediction tool for anthocyanins and sugar in whole fresh raspberry

Oliver Gales et al.

Summary: Both NIR models combined with new portable NIR devices provide unprecedented opportunity for the application of instantaneous and simultaneous quality parameter prediction for commercial raspberry producers and researchers. The numerous benefits NIR has brought to other horticultural industries are now closer for the raspberry industry with this proof of concept.

Analysis of visual features and classifiers for Fruit classification problem

Sumaira Ghazal et al.

Summary: The analysis focuses on using traditional machine learning techniques for fruit classification based on various handcrafted visual features. It proposes a novel feature combination that outperforms others by being invariant to rotation and illumination effects, providing good results for identifying subcategories of fruits with high classification accuracies for visually similar difficult fruit categories. The approach is trained and tested on the publicly available Fruits 360 dataset, achieving classification accuracies between 99% and 100% with Back Propagation Neural Network, SVM and KNN classifier.

Relationship of the optical properties with soluble solids content and moisture content of strawberry during ripening

Dandan Xie et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between optical properties and soluble solids content (SSC) and moisture content in strawberries during ripening. The results showed that absorption coefficient (mu a) at 1411 nm had the best correlation with SSC and moisture content. Support vector machine models based on mu a spectra had the smallest root-mean-squares error for determining the internal quality of strawberries.
