Variations of Personal Exposure to Particulate Nitrated Phenols from Heating Energy Renovation in China: The First Assessment on Associated Toxicological Impacts with Particle Size Distributions

Rong Feng et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the substitution of raw coal chunk and biomass by advanced clean coal can effectively reduce particulate matter (PM) and nitrated phenols (NPs) in personal exposure samples. It also shows that the clean coal can efficiently decrease interleukin-6 (IL-6) and 8-hydrox-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) levels in urine and saliva. Furthermore, the study reveals a strong particle size dependence between NPs and biomarkers.

Emission characteristics and assessment of potential health risks on PM2.5-bound organics from incense burning

Jie Li et al.

Summary: Incense burning is a significant source of indoor air pollution in many Asian countries, especially in China. The study found that incense burning emits toxic compounds that pose a certain level of health risk. The research suggests that advanced types of incense should be preferred over traditional ones to reduce toxic emissions. The establishment of stricter regulations on incense production and emission is necessary.

Characteristics of indoor and personal exposure to particulate organic compounds emitted from domestic solid fuel combustion in rural areas of northwest China

Kailai He et al.

Summary: Household solid fuel combustion for heating in winter is a major source of air pollution in rural northwest China, particularly in households using coal as the primary fuel. Housewives had significantly higher personal exposure to particulate matter (PM) due to short-term exposure to high-concentration pollution emitted during solid fuel combustion.

Parent, alkylated, oxygenated and nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in PM2.5 emitted from residential biomass burning and coal combustion: A novel database of 14 heating scenarios

Yue Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that the emission factors (EFs) of PAHs from biomass burning were in the range of 84.5-344 mg/kg, and from coal combustion were in the range of 38.0-206 mg/kg. Emission factors were lower from high-density biomass fuels than low-maturity coal fuels.

Emission factors, characteristics, and gas-particle partitioning of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in PM2.5 emitted for the typical solid fuel combustions in rural Guanzhong Plain, China

Bin Zhang et al.

Summary: The study showed that the emissions of pollutants from clean briquette coal combustion were significantly lower than those from bituminous coal and biomass burning, suggesting its potential as a cleaner energy source. Gas-phase PAHs and particulate-phase PAHs mainly existed in the gas phase and were influenced by absorption.

Source profiles and emission factors of organic and inorganic species in fine particles emitted from the ultra-low emission power plant and typical industries

Xin Zeng et al.

Summary: Accurate source markers, profiles, and species-based emission factors are crucial for source apportionment and emission inventory research. This study collected PM2.5 from eight stationary sources, revealing dominant chemical species and identifying indicative chemical components and species ratios through statistical equations and randomForest. The study contributes to identifying emission sources of PM2.5, especially for subtypes of stationary sources, and to improving emission inventories continuously.

Integrated analysis of source-specific risks for PM2.5-bound metals in urban, suburban, rural, and industrial areas

Chin-Yu Hsu et al.

Summary: The study investigated PM2.5-bound metals in multiple locations in Taiwan and proposed a methodology for comparing metal elements across regions and prioritizing source contributions through health risk assessments. Differences in metal concentrations were found between industrial, urban, and rural areas. Industry-related metals were higher in industrial sites, while traffic-related metals were higher in urban areas. The rural area had good air quality.

Characteristics, sources, and health risks of PM2.5-bound trace elements in representative areas of Northern Zhejiang Province, China

Jingsha Xu et al.

Summary: This study characterized PM2.5-bound trace elements in Northern Zhejiang Province and assessed the associated health risks for the general populations. The major sources of trace elements in NZP were identified as fossil fuel combustion, biomass burning, crustal dust, traffic, and industrial emissions. Arsenic and Chromium were identified as cancer risk drivers, highlighting the need for control measures to reduce health risks in the region.

Summary: PM2.5 monitoring in Tula, Hidalgo, Mexico, an industrialized area, revealed carbonaceous aerosols, ionic species, and particle-bound PAHs as major pollutants. Principal Component Analysis identified multiple sources contributing to PM2.5 variance, including heavy-oil combustion, vehicle exhaust, biomass burning, among others. Combustion of solid waste resulted in elevated toxic species levels, and a health risk assessment showed a decrease in cancer risk with emission reduction plans.
