Removal efficiency of organic micropollutants in successive wastewater treatment steps in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant: Bench-scale application of tertiary treatment processes to improve removal of organic micropollutants persisting after secondary treatment

Sangki Choi et al.

Summary: The goal of this study was to investigate the occurrence and removal of 52 organic micropollutants (OMPs) during each wastewater treatment step in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The results showed that secondary biological treatment contributed the most to overall removal of the OMPs. Additionally, an additional tertiary treatment with powdered activated carbon (PAC) or a biological activated carbon (BAC) process can further enhance the removal efficiency of OMPs.

Emerging pharmaceuticals and industrial chemicals in Nakdong River, Korea: Identification, quantitative monitoring, and prioritization

Naree Park et al.

Summary: The study found the presence of various anthropogenic substances in the Nakdong River in Korea, with niflumic acid and melamine showing the highest concentrations. The content of these substances was influenced by seasonal changes, with concentrations increasing in winter for some substances, and in summer and spring for others. These changes were also reflected in the risk quotient (RQ) values.

Effect-Based Trigger Values for Mixtures of Chemicals in Surface Water Detected with In Vitro Bioassays

Beate I. Escher et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new method to define effect-based trigger values for different bioassays, which are determined by considering the distribution of specificity ratios of all active chemicals. The new method not only takes mixture effects into account but also includes all chemicals, leading to more accurate differentiation of water quality variances.

Development of a framework to derive effect-based trigger values to interpret CALUX data for drinking water quality

Frederic Been et al.

Summary: Bioassays are increasingly used for water quality monitoring due to limitations of targeted chemical analyses; interpretation of results is challenging as positive response does not always indicate increased risk; this study derived EBT values for selected bioassays, showing potential for routine monitoring applications.

Spatial variation of pharmaceuticals in the unit processes of full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plants in Korea

Dong-Jin Son et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the spatial variations of fifteen pharmaceuticals in the unit processes of four full-scale municipal WWTPs by analyzing solid and liquid samples. Different pathways for pharmaceutical removal were investigated, with acetaminophen and caffeine showing a significant decrease in mass loading in the biological treatment process, while ibuprofen exhibited a temporary increase possibly due to deconjugation. Adsorption by biosolids was the major removal mechanism for selected antibiotics in WWTPs. The use of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) was found to be effective in reducing pharmaceuticals in municipal wastewater due to its high concentration of biosolids acting as adsorbents.
