Effects of perfluoroalkyl substances on root and rhizosphere bacteria: Phytotoxicity, phyto-microbial remediation, risk assessment

Huinian Liu et al.

Summary: The study revealed the impacts of PFAS on plant growth and rhizosphere microbiomes, showing specific relationships between bioaccumulation and phytotoxicity of different PFAS, as well as the influence of short-term and long-term exposure on root antioxidant system and physiological metabolism. Mixed contamination had a more complex effect on rhizosphere microbial diversity and community composition.

Extending the knowledge about PFAS bioaccumulation factors for agricultural plants - A review

Lukas Lesmeister et al.

Summary: The main source of PFASs in agricultural plants is their uptake from contaminated soil. A comprehensive review of >4500 soil-to-plant BAFs for 45 PFASs from 24 studies involving 27 genera of agricultural crops revealed that factors such as plant growth stage and type can significantly affect the transfer of PFASs, and the number of perfluorinated carbons absorbed by plants can impact the levels of BAFs.

Assessment of PFAS fate, transport, and treatment inhibition associated with a simulated AFFF release within a WASTEWATER treatment plant

Dana Gonzalez et al.

Summary: The operation of SBRs for 36 days to simulate the impact of AR-AFFF on wastewater treatment showed small reductions in mixed liquor solids content and nitrification rates after two days of exposure to the foam. The addition of AR-AFFF led to an increase in 6:2 FTS concentrations and a proposed biotransformation pathway suggested the degradation of precursors to final short-chain perfluorocarboxylic acid products. Data extrapolation indicated that approximately 70% of AR-AFFF could be removed via effluent and solids wasting after 4 days at a full-scale treatment plant, providing insights for downstream processes.

Monitoring the nitrous oxide emissions and biological nutrient removal from wastewater treatment: Impact of per fl uorooctanoic acid

Hongbo Chen et al.

Summary: The study showed that PFOA inhibited nitrification but promoted denitrification, reducing N2O emissions and increasing total nitrogen removal efficiency. Microorganisms released EPS under PFOA exposure to protect sludge cells, reducing nitrification rate but increasing denitrification rate.

A review of responses of terrestrial organisms to perfluorinated compounds

Yanping Cai et al.

Summary: Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are a class of persistent organic pollutants widely distributed in the environment, with significant impact in soil environments necessitating toxicological assessment on terrestrial organisms. The effects of PFCs on soil microorganisms, plants, and earthworms mainly accelerate the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in terrestrial organisms, calling for further in-depth research on the complex soil environment.

Rapid Response of Nitrogen Cycling Gene Transcription to Labile Carbon Amendments in a Soil Microbial Community

Peter F. Chuckran et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that soil microbial communities can rapidly respond to changes in carbon availability by significantly altering the transcription of nitrogen cycling genes, accelerating processes of nitrogen fixation and assimilation. This highlights the impact of carbon inputs on soil microbial communities and their crucial role in nutrient cycling.

Weilan Zhang et al.

Summary: Our study found that Carex comosa plants absorbed and translocated five selected ether-PFAS to plant shoots, with exposure concentration and time positively affecting plant uptake. The five ether-PFAS had different distributions in soil, with water-soluble fraction increasing with decreasing carbon chain length and logKow values.

Performance of Full-Scale Thermophilic Membrane Bioreactor and Assessment of the Effect of the Aqueous Residue on Mesophilic Biological Activity

Maria Cristina Collivignarelli et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of one of the two full-scale thermophilic membrane bioreactors in Italy, showing that removal yields on chemical pollutants increased with input load, while sludge production remained low during stability. Oxygen uptake rate tests excluded the acute inhibition of mesophilic biomass by aqueous residues, except for certain substrates. Respirometric tests proved to be a valuable tool for assessing the acute effects of ThMBR's aqueous residues on mesophilic biomass.
