Hexachloronaphthalene (HxCN) impairs the dopamine pathway in an in vitro model of PC12 cells

Malwina Lisek et al.

Summary: PCN67 is considered the most toxic congener among polychlorinated naphthalenes, affecting human health by causing hepatotoxicity and disrupting reproductive, endocrine, and hematological systems. Studies have shown that PCN67 disturbs dopaminergic transmission by reducing dopamine synthesis, affecting the expression of antioxidant enzymes, and altering vesicular monoamine transporter 1 expression.

Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PBDD/Fs): Contamination in food, humans and dietary exposure

Alwyn R. Fernandes et al.

Summary: PBDD/Fs have been recognized as environmental pollutants for decades, sharing similar toxic responses and origins with PCDD/Fs. However, they have received less attention possibly due to higher analytical complexity. Their toxicity in foods is often expressed as TEQs, but estimates are more uncertain due to differences in responses and occurrence patterns. Presence of PBDD/Fs in a wide range of foods suggests potential exposure exceeding tolerable intake levels for certain populations.

Concentrations of organic contaminants in industrial and municipal bioresources recycled in agriculture in the UK

Hannah Rigby et al.

Summary: This study assessed the level of organic chemical contaminants in various industrial and municipal bioresource materials, indicating a decline in environmental emissions of some contaminants but highlighting the presence of high concentrations of certain pollutants that require continued vigilance and control to support the beneficial use of secondary bioresource materials.

An assessment of the estrogenic and androgenic properties of tetra- and hexachloronaphthalene by YES/YAS in vitro assays

Joanna Stragierowicz et al.

Summary: The study found that 1,2,3,5,6,7-hexachloronaphthalane (PCN67) exhibited antiestrogenic activity, while both 1,3,5,8-tetrachloronaphthalene (PCN43) and PCN67 showed strong antiandrogenic effects. Exposure to PCNs, along with other endocrine disrupting chemicals, may contribute to the deregulation of sex steroid hormone signaling.

D. Zacs et al.

Summary: A study evaluated the dietary exposure of Latvian population to polychlorinated naphthalenes. Fish and fish products were found to be the main contributors to the dietary dioxin-like burden of PCNs, although the overall dietary exposure to PCNs is likely to be of low concern.

Polychlorinated Naphthalenes across the Great Lakes: Lake Trout and Walleye Concentrations, Trends, and TEQ Assessment-2004-2018

James J. Pagano et al.

Summary: The study investigated the levels of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) in lake trout and walleye in the Great Lakes region from 2004 to 2018. Most sampling sites showed a decrease in PCN concentrations and toxic equivalence (TEQ) over the period, except for Lake Erie where concentrations increased. Furthermore, the study found a significant shift towards lower-chlorinated composition of PCN congeners in lake trout and walleye, leading to a substantial reduction in overall PCN TEQ burden.
