A temperature-responsive release cellulose-based microcapsule loaded with chlorpyrifos for sustainable pest control

Douxin Xiao et al.

Summary: A temperature-responsive release microcapsule loaded with chlorpyrifos showed high pesticide-loading efficiency, adhesion on plant foliage, and protection against photodegradation. The controlled-release characteristics of the microcapsule could be adjusted based on temperature changes and the efficacy against pests was positively correlated with temperature-induced release rate changes. The acute toxicity of the microcapsule to zebrafish was significantly reduced compared to conventional pesticide formulations. These findings suggest that the microcapsule release system has great potential in developing effective and environmentally friendly pesticide formulations.

Chemical factors affecting uptake and translocation of six pesticides in soil by maize (Zea mays L.)

Feiyan Wang et al.

Summary: The uptake of six residual pesticides by maize in soil is influenced by their physicochemical properties, especially the octanol/water partition coefficient. The accumulation amount is positively correlated with adsorption coefficients and pesticide concentration in in situ pore water, while the root bioconcentration factor is influenced by log K-ow and molecular weight, and the translocation factor is affected by log K-ow and water solubility.

Potential for phytoremediation of neonicotinoids by nine wetland plants

Huanping Liu et al.

Summary: The study assessed the phytoremediation abilities of nine wetland plant species for neonicotinoids, finding that Cyperus alternifolius and Cyperus papyrus exhibited the best removal performance for all six neonicotinoids. The main removal processes were determined to be biodegradation and plant accumulation, with further research needed on the toxicity of neonicotinoids to plants and microorganisms and their metabolic pathways in wetland systems.

Occurrence and distribution of poly-and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in a surface flow constructed wetland

Dongqing Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the occurrence and distribution of PFASs in a surface flow wetland ecosystem in New York State, USA, and their relationships with microbial communities. The main PFASs detected were PFOS and PFOA, with carbon-chain length being a primary factor influencing their behavior in the aquatic environment. Microbial community variations were associated with PFAS concentrations, with certain bacteria species being more abundant in areas with higher PFAS levels.

Effects of ferric-phosphate forms on phosphorus release and the performance of anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge

Zhipeng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of different forms of Fe(III)Ps on phosphorus release and the performance of waste activated sludge (WAS) during anaerobic fermentation. The results show that Fe(III)Ps have diverse impacts on P release and the efficiency of anaerobic fermentation, with certain Fe(III)Ps even inhibiting the fermentation process.

Summary: Current approaches are often limited to evaluating the contribution of pesticide dissipation processes in water-sediment systems. Compound-specific isotope analysis emphasized the importance of pesticide degradation in the water phase. Combining CSIA with high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry for the identification of transformation products can improve the interpretation of pesticide dissipation in water-sediment systems.

Chijioke Olisah et al.

Summary: Many South African estuaries are impacted by pollutants from industrial and agricultural runoff, sewage outfalls, contaminated storm water drainage, informal settlements, and plastic marine debris, leading to elevated levels of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Research has shown that some estuaries exceed health advisory levels for chemicals such as PCBs and PFASs, highlighting the need for improved monitoring and government policies to prevent further contamination and protect ecosystem services.

Promoting the degradation of organic micropollutants in tertiary moving bed biofilm reactors by controlling growth and redox conditions

Ellen Edefell et al.

Summary: A novel process configuration with additional substrate from primary treated wastewater was designed to improve micropollutant removal in MBBRs with low substrate availability. The recirculating MBBR showed a significant increase in biomass concentration and micropollutant degradation rates, with aerobic conditions being critical for high degradation rates. The results suggest that degradation rates normalized to carrier surface area can facilitate the comparison of different biofilm systems.
