Pre-oxidation of Microcystis aeruginosa-laden water by intensified chlorination: Impact of growth phase on cell degradation and in-situ formation of carbonaceous disinfection by-products

Jr-Lin Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of pre-chlorination on Microcystis aeruginosa-laden water in different growth phases and the formation of carbonaceous disinfection by-products. The results showed that chlorination at the exponential phase led to faster and stronger degradation of algal cells, resulting in more significant viability loss and the formation of disinfection by-products, especially trihalomethanes. Pre-chlorination played a key role in the in-situ formation of disinfection by-products, with precursors contributing differently at each growth phase.

UV/chlorination process of algal-laden water: Algal inactivation and disinfection byproducts attenuation

Feilong Dong et al.

Summary: The combination of UV and chlorination effectively inhibits algal growth and reduces the formation of DBPs in algal-impacted surface waters. Higher UV doses, longer oxidation time, and neutral to acidic pH conditions are beneficial in controlling DBPs formation. UV/chlorination can promote brominated DBPs formation while reducing chlorinated DBPs in algal solutions containing bromide, making it a feasible treatment method for algal-rich water.

Characterization of algal organic matter as precursors for carbonaceous and nitrogenous disinfection byproducts formation: Comparison with natural organic matter

Xi-Xi Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the physicochemical properties, components, and disinfection byproduct formation potentials (DBPFPs) of algal organic matter (AOM) and natural organic matter (NOM) in a typical eutrophic lake. Results showed that AOM had higher organic nitrogen content and exhibited higher DBPFPs, especially for nitrogenous DBPFP. The study also found that the molecular weight distribution between AOM and NOM was similar, but AOM had higher concentrations of building blocks while NOM had higher concentrations of biopolymers and humics (HS).

Disinfection byproduct formation from algal organic matters after ozonation or ozone combined with activated carbon treatment with subsequent chlorination

Qiufeng Lin et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of ozonation or ozone combined with activated carbon treatment on the characteristic alteration and disinfection byproduct formation from algal organic matter. Results showed that O-3-AC treatment was effective in removing DBP precursors, controlling DBP formation, and significantly reducing THM precursors. The study suggests that O-3-AC treatment is a feasible method for algal-impacted water systems.
