Removal efficiency of organic micropollutants in successive wastewater treatment steps in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant: Bench-scale application of tertiary treatment processes to improve removal of organic micropollutants persisting after secondary treatment

Sangki Choi et al.

Summary: The goal of this study was to investigate the occurrence and removal of 52 organic micropollutants (OMPs) during each wastewater treatment step in a full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The results showed that secondary biological treatment contributed the most to overall removal of the OMPs. Additionally, an additional tertiary treatment with powdered activated carbon (PAC) or a biological activated carbon (BAC) process can further enhance the removal efficiency of OMPs.

Most relevant sources and emission pathways of pollution for selected pharmaceuticals in a catchment area based on substance flow analysis

Andrea Ghirardini et al.

Summary: This study used substance flow analysis to estimate annual loads of two pharmaceuticals in a catchment area and identified the main emission pathways. It investigated parameters influencing the results and those with higher uncertainty, concluding with a comparison of predicted concentrations and directly measured concentrations, with main discrepancies found for sulfamethoxazole. Future research on monitoring campaigns under different conditions is recommended for further insights.

Activated carbon coupled with advanced biological wastewater treatment: A review of the enhancement in micropollutant removal

Marina Gutierrez et al.

Summary: This study reviews the removal efficiencies of micropollutants in biological treatment coupled with activated carbon, finding that activated carbon can enhance the removal of micropollutants and improve degradation processes for organic matter. Additionally, it was observed that activated carbon can positively impact sludge properties.
