Occurrence and distribution of antibiotics in groundwater, surface water, and sediment in Xiong'an New Area, China, and their relationship with antibiotic resistance genes

Caixia Fu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the contamination and ecological risks of 39 antibiotics in Xiong'an New Area, China, revealing potential antibiotic pollution in multiple environmental media and the selection pressure of antibiotics on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). It was found that surface water could be a possible source of antibiotic contamination in groundwater, and antibiotics like AMX posed the highest risk and should be controlled as a priority. The study highlighted the significant interaction between different media and the need for measures to prevent more serious pollution.

Occurrence, source apportionment and risk assessment of antibiotics in water and sediment from the subtropical Beibu Gulf, South China

Qi Wu et al.

Summary: Our study investigated the occurrence, spatial distribution, source, and ecological risks of 22 antibiotics in the Beibu Gulf, revealing a decreasing trend of antibiotic levels from coast to offshore area and identifying livestock and aquaculture as dominant sources. Risk assessment indicated medium risks to algae posed by certain antibiotics. Overall, our results provide significant insights into the fate and transport behaviors of antibiotics in the subtropical marine environment.

Pharmaceutical compounds used in the COVID-19 pandemic: A review of their presence in water and treatment techniques for their elimination

Carlos Augusto Morales-Paredes et al.

Summary: This article discusses the presence and removal of antiviral drugs in water bodies during the COVID-19 pandemic. The concentration of these drugs has been found to increase during the pandemic. Laboratory studies have shown that adsorption and advanced oxidation processes can effectively remove these drugs. Removal has been achieved at both pilot and full scales.

Antibiotics in surface water of East and Southeast Asian countries: A focused review on contamination status, pollution sources, potential risks, and future perspectives

Hoang Quoc Anh et al.

Summary: This review discusses the contamination status, sources, and ecological risks of antibiotics in surface water in East and Southeast Asia. Antibiotics were found to be ubiquitous in surface water, with different concentrations and distribution ranges in East Asian countries like China and South Korea compared to Southeast Asian nations. Effluent from wastewater treatment plants, aquaculture and livestock production activities, and urban sewage were identified as principal sources of antibiotics in surface water, while the ecological risks associated with antibiotic residues and antibiotic resistance were highlighted. Collaborative efforts from various stakeholders are necessary to manage and reduce the burden of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance in water bodies of East and Southeast Asian countries.

Pharmaceuticals in the marine environment: What are the present challenges in their monitoring?

Perrine Branchet et al.

Summary: There has been a growing interest in researching pharmaceutical residues in the environment in recent years, as they pose a potential threat to aquatic ecosystems. Monitoring pharmaceuticals in marine environments presents challenges such as substance selection, site configuration, and sampling strategies. Further research and development are needed to address the complexities of monitoring pharmaceuticals in marine matrices and to enhance water quality assessment and management decisions.

Qi Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence, bioaccumulation, and trophic magnification of 22 antibiotics in a subtropical food web from the Beibu Gulf. The research found distinct differences in antibiotic concentrations and types among marine taxa, with some chemicals showing trophic magnification through the food web. Additionally, the study highlighted the potential bioaccumulation of antibiotics in marine organisms based on their log D-ow values.

Occurrence of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in WWTP effluent-receiving water bodies and reclaimed wastewater treatment plants

Rumeng Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence of antibiotics and ARGs in four WWTP effluents, downstream effluent-receiving water bodies and RWTPs. It was found that WWTP effluents were not the major contributors to the levels and species of antibiotics and ARGs in the surface water bodies. RWTPs showed good removal efficiency of antibiotics and ARGs.
