From plate to plug: The impact of offshore renewables on European fisheries and the role of marine spatial planning

V Stelzenmueller et al.

Summary: This study quantified for the first time the direct impact of offshore renewables (OR) development on European fisheries, finding that fishing fleets deploying bottom contacting gears targeting flatfish and crustaceans are the most affected. The study calls for European marine spatial planning processes to adopt common strategies in order to understand the implications of OR on free-ranging marine activities such as fisheries.

Summary: This study analyzes the geographical overlap of human activities and seabed habitats, as well as the suitability, limitations, and gaps of these datasets for management purposes. While there are some gaps in the data, the information and datasets generated may be useful for supporting different environmental assessment and management initiatives.

Conserving threatened marine species and biodiversity requires 40% ocean protection

Tamlin Jefferson et al.

Summary: The study found that areas of high threatened species richness are distributed throughout the world's coastal and continental shelf areas as well as in offshore regions and well-known biodiversity hotspots. While implementing Representative Biodiversity Areas (RBAs) could protect a minimum of 30% of most threatened species ranges, there are still 26 threatened species with distributions in areas with poor overlap with biodiversity priorities. Recognition of the importance of the High Seas to biodiversity conservation highlights the need for increased protection of important areas for biodiversity and threatened species across Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) and the High Seas.

A new framework and tool for ecological risk assessment of wave energy converters projects

I Galparsoro et al.

Summary: Marine renewable energy technologies have potential to diversify renewable sources and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, but their environmental impacts remain largely unknown. This research introduces a framework for quantifying and analyzing ecological risks of specific technologies, identifying main pressures and at-risk ecosystem elements. A novel risk assessment tool is developed to aid in the assessment and visualization of ecological risks in wave energy projects.

Assessment of collective pressure in marine spatial planning: The current approach of EU Member States

Trine Skovgaard Kirkfeldt et al.

Summary: The study found that EU Member States have limited and inadequate examples of cumulative impact assessments in national MSP processes, with most processes addressing collective pressure through CIA as part of a strategic environmental impact assessment. While MSPD requires MSP to ensure collective pressure is kept below a level compatible with good environmental status, the study found few examples of ecosystem-based MSP.

Spatial and temporal analysis of cumulative environmental effects of offshore wind farms in the North Sea basin

Laura Florentina Gusatu et al.

Summary: The study proposes a comprehensive assessment methodology for understanding the potential impacts of OWF projects on the marine ecosystem in the North Sea basin. Results indicate 2022 as the peak year for cumulative impacts of approved OWFs, with a significant increase in potential impacts from planned 212GWs by 2050. The research highlights the varying degrees of impact in concentrated areas (such as SE UK) and dispersed areas (Germany) over time.

The EU sustainable finance taxonomy and its contribution to climate neutrality

Franziska Schuetze et al.

Summary: The EU Taxonomy is a standardized and comprehensive classification system that can help investors make informed decisions on low-carbon technology investments. However, for some sectors, the thresholds are not yet stringent enough to support the transition to climate neutrality. Differentiation between low-emission and high-emission activities is necessary for sectors not covered by the Taxonomy.
