Thermally enhanced adsorption and persulfate oxidation-driven regeneration on FeCl3-activated biochar for removal of microcystin-LR in water

Shengquan Zeng et al.

Summary: This study proposed a cyclic process of adsorption and PS oxidation-driven regeneration using FeCl3-activated biochar (FA-BC) for the removal of MC-LR from water. Increasing temperature enhanced both the adsorption rate of MC-LR on FA-BC and the regeneration efficiency of MC-LR spent FA-BC. In addition, decreasing pH and increasing PS concentration also improved the regeneration efficiency.

Iron-activated bermudagrass-derived biochar for adsorption of aqueous sulfamethoxazole: Effects of iron impregnation ratio on biochar properties, adsorption, and regeneration

Shengquan Zeng et al.

Summary: This study focused on the effects of FeCl3 impregnation on the properties of biochars derived from bermudagrass, the adsorption of sulfamethoxazole onto the biochars, and the regeneration of spent biochars. The FeCl3 impregnation significantly enhanced the surface area, hydrophobicity, Fe content, and adsorption capacity of the biochars. Various adsorption mechanisms were identified between sulfamethoxazole and the FeCl3-activated biochars.

New insight to the use of oyster shell for removing phosphorus from aqueous solutions and fertilizing rice growth

Jae-In Lee et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of oyster shell waste as an adsorbent for phosphorus recovery from eutrophic lakes and as a slow-release fertilizer for rice growth in soil. The thermally treated OySh-800 showed high phosphorus adsorption capacity, which significantly promoted rice growth in pot experiments.

Adsorption of emerging contaminants from water and wastewater by modified biochar: A review

Ning Cheng et al.

Summary: Emerging contaminants (ECs), relatively low-concentration but high-toxicity pollutants in the environment, have attracted widespread attention in recent years. Biochar, as a low-cost and high-efficiency adsorbent, has been used to treat ECs in water. There are numerous reports on the removal of ECs from water by modified biochar.

Engineered biochars for recovering phosphate and ammonium from wastewater: A review

Muhammad Bilal Shakoor et al.

Summary: Biochar has been intensively studied for its potential applications in agricultural and environmental fields, particularly in recovering nutrients from wastewater. Engineered biochar with enhanced properties has been developed for better adsorption potential of nutrients in wastewater, and various modification methods have been reviewed for improving its adsorption capacity. The future prospects of using engineered biochar for phosphate and ammonium recovery from wastewater are promising, indicating its potential for sustainable and cost-effective nutrient recovery.

Adsorption and regeneration on iron-activated biochar for removal of microcystin-LR

Shengquan Zeng et al.

Summary: Novel iron activated biochars (FA-BCs) were prepared by simultaneous pyrolysis and activation of FeCl3-pretreated bermudagrass (BG), showing enhanced surface area, adsorption capacity, and high regeneration efficiency for removing microcystin-LR (MC-LR) in aqueous solution. The possible mechanisms for MC-LR adsorption onto FA-BC include electrostatic attraction, p-π interaction, hydrogen bond, and hydrophobic interactions. The detailed adsorption studies indicated chemisorption and intra-particle diffusion limitation as main factors in the adsorption process, with high efficiency achieved in regeneration and removal of MC-LR from real lake water.

New use for biochar derived from bovine manure for tetracycline removal

Jiawei Zhao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the physicochemical properties of bovine manure biochar obtained at different temperatures and their adsorption of tetracycline. The results showed that both BC-500 and BC-700 had high TC removal rates, with different maximum adsorption capacities, and were well described by pseudo-second order kinetics. Even after multiple cycles, the biochar still maintained satisfactory removal efficiencies, mainly through hydrophobic interactions and pi-pi electron donor acceptor interactions.

Performance and mechanism of a biochar-based Ca-La composite for the adsorption of phosphate from water

Yiyang Feng et al.

Summary: In this study, a calcium-modified biochar with high dephosphorization efficiency was prepared using sheep manure and oyster shells, but it was found to have low pH adaptability. Lanthanum-doped biochar demonstrated strong phosphate adsorption ability across a wide pH range, suggesting a potential method for improving the adsorption performance of calcium-modified biochar.
