Exploring the causal relationship between urbanization and air pollution: Evidence from China

Haimeng Liu et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of urbanization on air pollution in China and finds that urbanization has both negative and positive effects on air quality, depending on the stage and policies of urbanization. From 2000 to 2012, urbanization had an impact on PM2.5 concentration, but the effects were mostly not significant from 2013 to 2019. After 2015, China's urbanization decoupled from PM2.5 concentrations.

Assessing the evolution of PM2.5 and related health impacts resulting from air quality policies in China

Haimeng Liu et al.

Summary: Air pollution is a major environmental health risk worldwide, and particularly in China. With the implementation of stringent clean air policies, China has made significant progress in improving air quality. The study shows that PM2.5 concentrations have decreased in recent years, especially in urban agglomerations. The proportion of population, land, and cities exposed to high levels of PM2.5 has also decreased. As a result of air quality policies, the annual deaths attributable to PM2.5 pollution have decreased in 2019.

The coupling curve between urbanization and the eco-environment: China's urban agglomeration as a case study

Chuanglin Fang et al.

Summary: The study proposed the Urbanization-EKC (UEKC) hypothesis based on Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) theory, which suggests that eco-environment quality first deteriorates and then improves in the process of urbanization. Empirical analysis of 19 Chinese urban agglomerations found heterogeneous coupling curves between urbanization and eco-environment, with a U-shaped trend. In five mega-urban agglomerations, the turning point for eco-environmental quality improvement was identified at an urbanization rate of 47%.

The effects of an air quality alert program on premature mortality: A difference-in-differences evaluation in the region of Paris

Anna Alari et al.

Summary: The Air Quality Alerts (AQA) system was implemented in Paris, France in 2008 and revised in 2011 to have more stringent thresholds. The study found that the AQA system did not reduce mortality when thresholds were set at high PM10 levels initially, but did show a reduction in cardiovascular mortality when thresholds were revised to lower levels in 2011.

Does national air quality monitoring reduce local air pollution? The case of PM2.5 for China

Guixian Liu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the NAAQMN program significantly reduces local PM2.5 concentrations in China, with each additional program leading to further decrease. The impact of the NAAQMN program on local PM2.5 emissions varies based on local government leaders' characteristics, PM2.5 emission levels, and economic development levels. Additionally, a mediation effect between the NAAQMN program and local PM2.5 emissions is identified through the efficiency of environmental governance.

Is collaborative governance effective for air pollution prevention? A case study on the Yangtze river delta region of China

Yu Wang et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the policy effects of collaborative governance for air pollution prevention in the Yangtze River Delta region and highlights the limited long-term impact of regional policies on reducing air pollutants, emphasizing the importance of inter-regional cooperation. The results indicate the need for clear division of responsibilities, balanced cost-benefit sharing, and coordinated enforcement to enhance the effectiveness of collaborative governance.

Carbon and air pollutant emissions from China's cement industry 1990-2015: trends, evolution of technologies, and drivers

Jun Liu et al.

Summary: China, as the largest cement producer and consumer in the world, has experienced significant increases in CO2, SO2, and NOx emissions from the cement industry from 1990 to 2015. However, the introduction of advanced technologies and policy measures has helped in reducing air pollutant emissions, particularly SO2, CO, and PM emissions, while CO2 emissions continue to rise, posing challenges to carbon emission mitigation in the future.
