Urban core-downwind differences and relationships related to ozone production in a major urban area in Texas

Fangzhou Guo et al.

Summary: San Antonio, the second-largest city in Texas, has been designated as a marginal non-attainment area for the 2015 ozone National Ambient Air Quality Standard by the US Environmental Protection Agency. Field measurements and modeling suggest that nitrogen oxides play a key role in O3 formation, with recommendations to strengthen NOX emission controls to reduce O3 formation in the city.

Revisiting Acetonitrile as Tracer of Biomass Burning in Anthropogenic-Influenced Environments

Yibo Huangfu et al.

Summary: Acetonitrile (CH3CN) is widely used as a tracer for biomass burning, but its absolute mixing ratio may lead to misidentification in anthropogenic-influenced environments. Despite high levels of CH3CN observed with minor biomass burning impact, its correlation with CO suggests a shared source, likely vehicular emissions. Enhancement ratios (EnRs) of CH3CN to CO were found to be a more specific indicator for biomass burning compared to urban measurements.

Modification of a conventional photolytic converter for improving aircraft measurements of NO2 via chemiluminescence

Clara M. Nussbaumer et al.

Summary: NO2 plays a central role in atmospheric photochemical processes. This study measured NO2 concentrations using photolysis-chemiluminescence and identified MPN as a species causing thermal interference. The research also discovered a memory effect in traditional photolytic converters and found that a new quartz glass converter can improve the reliability of NO2 measurements.
