Cyanobacteria blooms potentially enhance volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from a eutrophic lake: Field and experimental evidence*

Mengdi Liu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that during cyanobacteria blooms in eutrophic Chaohu Lake, lake water was the primary source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), with alkanes and aromatics being the most abundantly emitted VOCs, and cyanobacteria acting as an important source of VOCs.

Distributions of volatile halocarbons and impacts of ocean acidification on their production in coastal waters of China

Yu Han et al.

Summary: The study found that the concentrations of volatile halocarbons in the Changjiang Estuary and adjacent waters were influenced by various factors; their vertical distributions were determined by the mixing of water masses; VHCs were positively correlated with salinity and nutrient availability; and the study area was a net source of these trace gases.

Programmed cell death of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii induced by three cyanobacterial volatiles β-ionone, limonene and longifolene

Jialu Liu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that beta-Ionone, limonene and longifolene may poison other algae by inducing programmed cell death (PCD), leading to degradation of chlorophyll, decrease in Fv/Fm, increase in caspase-like activities, nuclear condensation and DNA ladder formation. These findings suggest a toxic mechanism by which these compounds kill algae.
