On-farm soil resistome is modified after treating dairy calves with the antibiotic florfenicol

Jinxin Liu et al.

Summary: Exposure to antibiotic-treated animals had a direct impact on the soil microbiome and resistome, leading to significant increases in antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in the exposed soil. Evaluating on-farm effects to soil after exposure to antibiotic-treated animals can help in designing effective management strategies to mitigate antibiotic resistance in food-animal production.

Bioaccumulation of Manure-borne antibiotic resistance genes in carrot and its exposure assessment

Zhi Mei et al.

Summary: The distribution and accumulation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in root vegetable tissues are affected by manure application, with the rhizosphere being a hotspot for ARGs enrichment. Children and adults may ingest significant amounts of ARGs copies from carrots grown with pig manure, but peeling can reduce the intake by 28-91%. Manure application increases the accumulation of ARGs in carrot skin, while peeling is an effective strategy to reduce the risk.

Targeted metagenomics reveals inferior resilience of farm soil resistome compared to soil microbiome after manure application

Goncalo Macedo et al.

Summary: Application of animal manure introduces manure-derived bacteria and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) into soils, but does not significantly alter the overall bacterial community composition. Using high-throughput sequencing and ResCap techniques can provide insights into the fate of antimicrobial resistance in the environment.

Single and ternary competitive adsorption-desorption and degradation of amphenicol antibiotics in three agricultural soils

Wenjin Ma et al.

Summary: The study reveals the weak adsorption capacity of veterinary antibiotics in soil, their susceptibility to microbial degradation, and the poor persistence of florfenicol in soil, which may have a significant impact on groundwater.

Enhanced control of sulfonamide resistance genes and host bacteria during thermophilic aerobic composting of cow manure

Muhammad Fahad Sardar et al.

Summary: Traditional composting has shown certain effects in eliminating antibiotic residues, ARBs, and ARGs. However, the rebounding of ARGs during conventional aerobic composting remains a serious threat. This study found that thermophilic aerobic composting can enhance the degradation of antibiotics, limit the rebounding of ARGs, and significantly influence bacterial diversity. Network analysis revealed potential hosts of ARGs and suggested that thermophilic composting may be more efficient in controlling antibiotic resistance compared to conventional methods.

Using the heat generated from electrically conductive concrete slabs to reduce antibiotic resistance in beef cattle manure

Zachery R. Staley et al.

Summary: This study tested a novel heat-based technology by stockpiling beef cattle manure on conductive concrete slabs to reduce antibiotic resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes. Results showed a significant reduction in total Escherichia coli and enterococci, as well as a decrease in ARGs presence in the heated piles.
