Abundance and Fractional Solubility of Aerosol Iron During Winter at a Coastal City in Northern China: Similarities and Contrasts Between Fine and Coarse Particles

Huanhuan Zhang et al.

Summary: Aerosol deposition is an important source of soluble iron in open oceans, affecting marine biogeochemistry and primary production. This study measured the abundance and fractional solubility of iron in fine and coarse particles in Qingdao, a coastal city in northern China. The results showed that iron solubility was higher in fine particles compared to coarse particles, with higher solubility observed at high aerosol acidity and high relative humidity.

Analysis of reduced and oxidized nitrogen-containing organic compounds at a coastal site in summer and winter

Jenna C. Ditto et al.

Summary: Nitrogen-containing organic compounds, which may be emitted directly into the atmosphere or form via reactions with reactive nitrogen species, have significant impacts on climate and human health, with a prevalence in the northeastern US and other regions with similar anthropogenic, biogenic, and marine source signatures. The study conducted molecular-level speciation of functionalized organic compounds, identifying a range of compounds containing oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur atoms resulting from both direct emissions and chemical transformations, with nitrogen-containing particles dominating the observed distribution of functionalized particle-phase species. Additionally, gas-phase measurements suggest that gas-phase reduced nitrogen compounds may serve as contributing precursors to the observed nitrogen-containing particles.

Strong marine-derived nitrous acid (HONO) production observed in the coastal atmosphere of northern China

Juan Yang et al.

Summary: This study conducted field observations at a coastal site in Qingdao, China, and found that the production of HONO in the marine atmosphere may have been previously underestimated, with marine-derived HONO having comparable or larger impacts on OH and O-3 compared to land-derived sources. Correlation analysis suggested that heterogeneous conversion of NO2 and photolysis of nitrogen-containing compounds were potentially important sources of HONO in the marine atmosphere.

Characteristics and sources of amine-containing particles in the urban atmosphere of Liaocheng, a seriously polluted city in North China during the COVID-19 outbreak

Zheng Li et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 lockdown in Liaocheng, China, amine-containing particles in the air decreased compared to pre-lockdown levels due to reduced emissions. Gas-to-particle partitioning of amines was influenced by acidity and temperature, with minor effects from relative humidity and liquid water content. Identified particle types were mainly sourced locally and from long-range transport before and after the lockdown.

Molecular characterization of organic aerosols in Taiyuan, China: Seasonal variation and source identification

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed PM2.5 samples collected in Taiyuan in 2018, revealing higher abundance of organosulfates in summer and aromatic amines/N-heterocycle aromatic hydrocarbons in winter. The molecular compositions were more saturated and oxidized in summer, and coal-burning pollutants may be transported by prevailing northwesterlies in winter.

Particulate Amines in the Background Atmosphere of the Yangtze River Delta, China: Concentration, Size Distribution, and Sources

Wei Du et al.

Summary: Amines in atmospheric particles were studied at a background site in the Yangtze River Delta during the summer of 2018. The concentrations of amines were found to be correlated with meteorological factors and aerosol characteristics, with main sources being anthropogenic and marine origins. Further field studies are needed for a better understanding of aerosol amine pollution characteristics in the YRD region.

Mapping gaseous dimethylamine, trimethylamine, ammonia, and their particulate counterparts in marine atmospheres of China's marginal seas - Part 1: Differentiating marine emission from continental transport

Dihui Chen et al.

Summary: The study on sea-derived gaseous amines and ammonia in the marine atmosphere of China's marginal seas found that observed TMA(gas) and TMAH(+) in PM2.5 predominantly originated from marine emissions, rather than continental transport. The gas species and aerosol ions in the marine atmosphere were mainly derived from the sea, indicating a marine source rather than continental origin.

Different characteristics and source contributions to aerosol aminiums over a coastal city and adjacent marginal seas

Zongjun Xu et al.

Summary: This study characterized aerosol aminiums over Shanghai and the Yellow and East China seas, finding higher concentrations in the winter of 2018 compared to the summer of 2019, indicating significant terrestrial contributions in Shanghai. Marine biogenic sources were identified as a predominant contributor to aminiums in the YECS region during summer, with DMAH(+) and TMDEAH(+) concentrations linked to surface phytoplankton biomass. Marine biogenic emissions may have a potential impact on coastal cities and should be considered in modelling new particle formation and air quality in these areas.

Sulfuric acid-amine nucleation in urban Beijing

Runlong Cai et al.

Summary: Based on long-term atmospheric measurements in Beijing, it was found that the collision of H2SO4-amine clusters is the dominant mechanism for initiating NPF in urban environments, while high aerosol concentration limits the rate of new particle formation. Additionally, in Beijing, the formation of H2SO4-amine clusters is sometimes restricted by low amine concentrations.
