Aerobic biofilm providing a habitat for anammox bacterial survival in mainstream of municipal wastewater treatment plants

Kai Lv et al.

Summary: Enrichment and accumulation of anammox bacteria in aerobic biofilm is crucial for successful nitrogen removal in municipal wastewater treatment plants. This study detected a relatively high percentage of anammox bacteria in the biofilm of two WWTPs in Xi'an, China, and estimated their contribution to nitrogen removal. These findings suggest that aerobic biofilm could enhance nitrogen removal in mainstream.

The role of hydroxylamine in promoting conversion from complete nitrification to partial nitrification: NO toxicity inhibition and its characteristics

Junkai Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that the addition of hydroxylamine can promote the accumulation of nitrite in a complete nitrification reactor, leading to partial nitrification, but the process will gradually disappear after stopping the hydroxylamine addition. Analysis of the microbial community revealed that the inhibition of Nitrospira is significant and reversible, possibly related to NO toxicity.

Ameliorating effect of nitrate on nitrite inhibition for denitrifying P-accumulating organisms

Ivar Zekker et al.

Summary: Lowering air supply and organic carbon demand are key factors in reducing wastewater treatment costs and preventing eutrophication. Utilizing denitrifying polyphosphate accumulating organisms (DPAOs) in the denitrifying PO4-- removal (DPR) process with nitrate has shown efficient removal of COD, nitrogen, and phosphorus in wastewater with high nitrite and nitrate content. The use of nitrate attenuation against nitrite toxicity can be economically justified in full-scale treatment applications.

Highly enriched anammox within anoxic biofilms by reducing suspended sludge biomass in a real-sewage A2/O process

Jianwei Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel strategy for stably enriching anammox in mainstream by utilizing competitive differences between anoxic biofilms and suspended sludge. Experimental results showed that anammox was significantly more abundant in anoxic-carrier biofilms compared to suspended sludge, and batch tests confirmed the effectiveness of anammox for nitrogen removal. Overall, this study demonstrates a promising and practical alternative for enriching anammox bacteria in municipal wastewater treatment plants.

Wenru Liu et al.

Summary: This study successfully started a high-rate CANON process by enhancing in-situ enrichment of anammox bacteria in aerobic granules. The dominant anammox species was Ca. Brocadia sapporoensis with an estimated growth rate of 0.008-0.013 d(-1) at 15 degrees C. The granular CANON process showed high total nitrogen removal rate and efficiency under aggressive conditions.

Achieving combined biological short-cut nitrogen and phosphorus removal in a one sludge system with side-stream sludge treatment

Xuanyu Lu et al.

Summary: A novel combined nitrogen and phosphorus removal strategy was verified in a biological short-cut nitrogen removal system via side-stream sludge treatment with free nitrous acid, leading to significant reduction in sludge retention time and maintaining P uptake activity at high FNA levels. Economic analysis showed savings compared to conventional nitrogen and phosphorus removal, nitrogen removal with chemical phosphorus precipitation, and nitrogen removal with chemical precipitation. This strategy presents a viable retrofit option for integrating biological nitrogen removal with enhanced biological phosphorus removal in WWTPs.
