Heterogeneity of humic/fulvic acids derived from composts explains the differences in accelerating soil Cd-hyperaccumulation by Sedum alfredii

Mao Gao et al.

Summary: The study investigates the hyperaccumulating mechanism of heavy metals activated or passivated by fulvic acid and humic acid, as well as the plant response triggered by these substances. Results show an increase in available Cd content in soil and Cd accumulation in plants after application of different sources of FA and HA, with the most effective being CFA, DFA, and PFA. Additionally, applications of PFA and PHA significantly increase Cd accumulation in plants compared to the blank control group.

Humates and Chlorides Synergistically Increase Cd Phytoaccumulation in Strawberry Fruits, Heightening Health Risk from Cd in Human Diet

Gabrijel Ondrasek et al.

Summary: The study found that salt-affected and sandy soils can exacerbate the transfer of the metal cadmium into the food chain. Salinity, humates, and cadmium contamination significantly influenced the accumulation of cadmium in strawberry plants, with elevated concentrations exceeding the European maximum limit in leaves and fruits. Surface analyses revealed the different properties of the substrates, with the SiO2-rich substrate having a nonporous and chemically unreactive surface, and the humates matrix characterized by abundant micro-porosity and reactive radicals. Chemical speciation modeling showed that most of the cadmium in the rhizosphere solution was dissolved and distributed among various pools, including bioavailable Cd2+, Cl-complexed, and HA-complexed forms.

Salt Stress in Plants and Mitigation Approaches

Gabrijel Ondrasek et al.

Summary: Salinization of soils and freshwater resources, caused by natural processes and/or human activities, has become an increasing issue. It affects environmental services, socioeconomic relations, and agroecosystems. Various approaches and solutions, including agro-hydrotechnical, biological, chemical, bio-ecological, and institutional solutions, are effective in combating salinity/salt stress and other constraints. Advances in computer science provide tools for predicting salinization processes under different scenarios, including climate change.

Environmental salinization processes: Detection, implications & solutions

Gabrijel Ondrasek et al.

Summary: Many of Earth's freshwater and land resources are affected by salinization, leading to destructive effects on ecosystems and agriculture. Traditional ameliorative strategies, along with advancements in biotechnology and ecoengineering, offer potential solutions to combat salinity, but knowledge gaps and ethical concerns remain to be addressed for successful industrial-scale implementation.

Salinity-induced changes in cadmium availability affect soil microbial and biochemical functions: Mitigating role of biochar

Nahid Azadi et al.

Summary: The application of sugarcane bagasse biochar can improve soil microbial and biochemical functions under stress conditions, such as Cd contamination and salinity, by increasing soil organic carbon content, immobilizing Cd, and supplying C substrate for microbial activity. The study suggests that biochar produced at 400 degrees C is more effective in improving soil microbial properties and functioning compared to biochar produced at 600 degrees C.

Effects of amendments on the bioavailability, transformation and accumulation of heavy metals by pakchoi cabbage in a multi-element contaminated soil

Song Li et al.

Summary: The study found that adding different ratios of amendments can increase the soil pH and organic matter content, effectively reducing the concentration of extractable heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, zinc and copper in the soil. Additionally, the application of these amendments can significantly promote the growth of pakchoi cabbage, while reducing the uptake of heavy metals in the plants.
