Influence of meteorological drought on environmental flows in mountain catchments

Dariusz Mlynski et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between meteorological drought and e-flow releases in eight catchments of southern Poland. The results showed a significant decreasing trend in streamflow rate in the Skawa sub-basin, while an increasing trend was observed in the Biala and Sekowka catchments of the Dunajec sub-basin. The study demonstrated the potential of SPI and PNI indices as helpful tools in water resources management and planning, particularly in predicting the impact of droughts on e-flows deficit.

Separating the effects of climate change and human activities on drought propagation via a natural and human-impacted catchment comparison method

Menghao Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposed a method to assess the impacts of climate change and human activities on drought propagation, using a catchment comparison approach. Results showed that climate change accelerates the propagation from meteorological drought to hydrological drought, while human activities disturb and delay this natural propagation process. The proposed method can be applied in other regions to improve drought prediction and water resources management.

Impacts of climate change on groundwater droughts by means of standardized indices and regional climate models

Daniele Secci et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impacts of climate change on groundwater droughts using regional projections and standardized indices. Historical data and regression analysis are used to model the relationships between groundwater indices and precipitation and evapotranspiration indices. The results suggest that there will be negative effects on groundwater levels in almost all wells in the future, with the largest decline expected in the medium-term for one scenario and a significant decrease in groundwater levels over the long-term for another scenario.

Adapting water tariffs to climate change: Linking resource availability, costs, demand, and tariff design flexibility

F. Silva Pinto et al.

Summary: The research explores the interaction between water supply and demand management, tariff design, and environmental phenomena instability to establish a novel flexible framework for modeling tariffs. The results highlight that designing water tariffs based on climatic and hydrologic information, utility costs, and water demand can avoid unnecessary constraints on utilities and delay investment requirements.

Trends and attribution of runoff changes in the upper and middle reaches of the Yellow River in China

Wei Liu et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the trends and breakpoints of runoff changes in the upper and middle reaches of the Yellow River, quantitatively distinguishing the impacts of climate change and human activities on runoff changes. The results showed that human activities played a dominant role in runoff change in the middle reaches, while the influence of climate change on runoff in the upper reaches was similar to that of human activities.

A Shared Vision on the Transboundary Water Management Challenges of the Tagus River Basin

Melissa Nogueira Sondermann et al.

Summary: The Tagus River basin is facing a growing challenge in water management due to increasing water demand and regulation by large reservoirs, leading to water scarcity and poor conditions in some areas. Current practices have significantly altered the natural river flow conditions in the basin and water managers are struggling to meet existing water uses. Increasing water demands will exacerbate these problems, highlighting the need for improved cross-border cooperation and revised water management policies at the basin scale.

BFAST Lite: A Lightweight Break Detection Method for Time Series Analysis

Dainius Masiliunas et al.

Summary: BFAST Lite is an improved unsupervised time series change detection algorithm derived from the original BFAST algorithm, offering increased speed and flexibility. It has similar accuracy to BFAST but is significantly faster and more flexible, with the ability to handle missing values and provide the best balance between user's and producer's accuracy. It serves as a useful addition to aid in global land cover change detection.
