Are belowground clonal traits good predictors of ecosystem functioning in temperate grasslands?

Jitka Klimesova et al.

Summary: This study is the first attempt to integrate belowground clonal and aboveground traits to predict biomass allocation and soil carbon. Findings indicate that the ability of plant functional traits in predicting ecosystem functioning is highly context dependent, varying greatly even within the same community type. Only SLA and, to a lesser extent, persistence of rhizome consistently predicted root biomass in the two regions.

Evenness alters the positive effect of species richness on community drought resistance via changing complementarity

Xiao-Yan Wang et al.

Summary: Species evenness significantly increases the drought resistance of plant communities by enhancing complementarity among species. A positive relationship between species richness and drought resistance is found at high and medium evenness, but not at low evenness. Neither species evenness nor species richness significantly affects selection effects for the drought resistance of the communities.

Degradation shifts plant communities from S- to R-strategy in an alpine meadow, Tibetan Plateau

Tiancai Zhou et al.

Summary: This study revealed the contrasting ecological strategies of different plant functional groups (sedges, grasses, and forbs) in alpine meadows on the Tibetan Plateau along a degradation gradient, and their impact on leaf traits and competitive performance of secondary forbs during degradation. The results showed that the response of plant species to decreasing available resources could lead to niche expansion of secondary forbs and a decrease in diversity in degraded alpine meadows.

Above- and belowground biodiversity jointly drive ecosystem stability in natural alpine grasslands on the Tibetan Plateau

Summary: Both above- and belowground biodiversity are positively associated with ecosystem stability. Belowground biodiversity not only affects ecosystem stability directly, but also influences it indirectly through plant diversity and soil fertility.

Functional Diversity Facilitates Stability Under Environmental Changes in an Outdoor Microalgal Cultivation System

Lina Mattsson et al.

Summary: A 3-year outdoor production of mixed consortia of locally adapted microalgae and bacteria in cold temperate latitude demonstrated the ability of the microbial consortia to maintain stable biomass production despite seasonal changes. The study suggests that a locally adapted and mixed microalgal consortia, with complementary traits, can be useful for optimizing yield in commercial scale microalgal cultivation.

Plant-microbe interactions regulate the aboveground community nitrogen accumulation rate in different environmental conditions on the Tibetan Plateau

Tiancai Zhou et al.

Summary: Experimental studies have shown that plant-microbe interactions are crucial for nitrogen absorption in different environments, with lower NAR in cold-dry climates and higher NAR in warm-wet climates. Cooperative interactions between microbes and plants stimulate NAR in weakly resource-limited environments, while competitive effects of microbes constrain NAR in strongly resource-limited environments. The NAR is influenced by water-heat availability and microbial biomass, which in turn affect plant diversity.

Functional trait effects on ecosystem stability: assembling the jigsaw puzzle

Summary: Under global change, maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem services over time is a fundamental question. Ecologists suggest that differences in functional traits among organisms play a key role in determining the temporal stability of ecosystem properties.

Incorporating clonality into the plant ecology research agenda

Jitka Klimesova et al.

Summary: There is a longstanding research divide in plant ecology, either focusing solely on plant clonality or all plants which affects the understanding of ecological processes. By incorporating clonal growth into research, valuable insights can be gained in areas such as response to productivity and disturbance, biotic interactions, and population dynamics. This integration is believed to provide a roadmap for gaining valuable insights into ecoevolutionary dynamics relevant to all plants.

Functional diversity and redundancy of subalpine meadows subjected to anthropogenic disturbances

Xiaoxia Huang et al.

Summary: The study assessed how functional diversity and redundancy respond to ecosystem degradation under disturbance, as well as how species contribute to redundancy along the disturbance gradient. A unimodal change pattern of FD and redundancy was found along the disturbance gradient, with maximum values in MD and WD. As disturbance intensified, species with conservative growth strategies decreased, while species with resource acquisitive strategies increased in the community. Some species played important and unique roles in the community in terms of their function, such as Ligularia dictyoneura in ND and Potentilla delavayi in MD and SD.
