An enhanced risk assessment framework for microplastics occurring in the Westerscheldt estuary

Ze Liu et al.

Summary: Microplastics pollution in freshwater systems is a growing concern. This study investigates the abundance, characteristics, and distribution of microplastics in the Scheldt River, finding higher abundance in sediments compared to surface water. Industrial activities are identified as the major source of microplastic release. Risk assessment reveals potential adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems and human health. The study highlights the need for monitoring and better understanding of microplastic distribution and characteristics.

Occurrence of tire and road wear particles in urban and peri-urban snowbanks, and their potential environmental implications

Elisabeth S. Rodland et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that tire and road wear particles are major sources of microplastic contamination. There is a wide variation in the mass concentrations and snow mass loads of these particles in snow. Contrary to previous findings, the speed limit is found to be a key variable impacting the mass concentrations. The presence of large amounts of suspended solids in roadside snow highlights the need for treatment before release into the environment.

Characterization of tire and road wear microplastic particle contamination in a road tunnel: From surface to release

Elisabeth S. Rodland et al.

Summary: This study explores the distribution of tire, polymer-modified bitumen (PMB), and tire and road wear particles (TRWP) in different tunnel compartments. It presents a new method for calculating TRWP and investigates the effectiveness of sedimentation treatment. The results reveal the importance of addressing road pollution as a major source of microplastic particles.

Tyre and road wear particles - A calculation of generation, transport and release to water and soil with special regard to German roads

Beate Baensch-Baltruschat et al.

Summary: This study calculated the emissions of tyre wear particles annually generated on the German road network and considered the environmental entry paths including releases to ambient air, soils, and surface waters. There was also a focus on road runoff treatment differentiated into sewage systems in urban areas and non-urban roads.

Hydrologic performance of grass swales in cold maritime climates: Impacts of frost, rain-on-snow and snow cover on flow and volume reduction

Tarek Zaqout et al.

Summary: The study shows that the efficiency of grass swales in winter significantly decreases, primarily due to frost formation and secondarily due to snow. The research highlights the importance of effectively draining infiltration-based systems in cold climates to avoid the adverse effects of low temperatures.

Chemical mapping of tire and road wear particles for single particle analysis

Michael Kovochich et al.

Summary: This study characterized the specific physical and chemical properties of individual TRWP using analytical techniques such as SEM/EDX mapping and ToF-SIMS mapping. The results showed that TRWP have specific shape, elemental surface characteristics, and organic surface markers, requiring a combination of physical and chemical markers for accurate identification.

Effect of Extreme Weather Events on Contaminant Transport From Urban Run-Off to a Fjord System

Gijs D. Breedveld et al.

Summary: Urbanization leads to increased contaminant runoff in urban rivers, while climate change increases the frequency of extreme weather events. Monitoring of pollutant levels in a small urban river in the inner Oslo fjord during snow-melting and rainfall events showed episodic responses in contaminant loads emitted to the fjord, with historic inputs mainly from pyrogenic sources like coal and wood burning as well as traffic.

Characterization of Individual Tire and Road Wear Particles in Environmental Road Dust, Tunnel Dust, and Sediment

Michael Kovochich et al.

Summary: This study extends the analysis of TRWPs in environmental samples using a density separation and chemical mapping protocol. The identification and characterization of TRWPs are based on physical and elemental surface characteristics, as well as organic surface markers and resistance to heat-induced deformation. The size distribution of TRWPs in environmental samples increases with sample complexity, as determined by the SPA methodologies.

Understanding the fate and control of road dust-associated microplastics in stormwater

Sirajum Monira et al.

Summary: This study investigates the sources, removal methods, and technical challenges of microplastic pollution in the water environment. It is found that constructed wetlands have limited effectiveness in removing MPs, leading to untreated stormwater releasing significant amounts of MPs into open water bodies. Future opportunities include the installation of membrane- or flotation-based technologies in the outlet of constructed wetlands for enhanced removal efficiency of MPs.

Drinking water quality assessment in distribution networks: A water footprint approach

Haroon R. Mian et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a grey water footprint-based framework for water quality assessment, integrating probabilistic human health risk assessment to address uncertainties. The results show that groundwater-based drinking water quality management strategies provide better water quality compared to surface water sources. The GWF approach categorizes water quality by estimating the volume of fresh water needed to dilute contaminant concentrations, allowing stakeholders to develop a trade-off between water quality and quantity management.

Paint particles in the marine environment: An overlooked component of microplastics

Andrew Turner

Summary: This paper critically examines the physico-chemical properties, sources, distributions, behavior, and toxicity of paint particles in the marine environment, highlighting the differences between paint particles and microplastics as well as their high chemical toxicity compared to similarly-sized synthetic debris. It also provides recommendations for greater use of particulate capturing devices, waste collection systems, and recycling facilities during paint disturbance, raising awareness of the impacts of discarded paint, and alerting the microplastic community to the significance of paint particles in environmental samples.
