The genetic identity of the earliest human-made hybrid animals, the kungas of Syro-Mesopotamia

E. Andrew Bennett et al.

Summary: Morphometric analysis of equids uncovered in Early Bronze Age burials in Syria suggests the presence of a new hybrid species, resulting from the F1 hybridization between female domestic donkeys and male hemippes.

Heterogeneous Hunter-Gatherer and Steppe-Related Ancestries in Late Neolithic and Bell Beaker Genomes from Present-Day France

Andaine Seguin-Orlando et al.

Summary: The transition from the Late Neolithic to the Bronze Age in western Europe saw significant population and societal changes, with the genetic diversity of Late Neolithic populations in France revealing heterogeneous hunter-gatherer ancestries and varying genetic contributions from steppe herders. This highlights the complex history of human interactions even at a local scale.

The origins and spread of domestic horses from the Western Eurasian steppes

Pablo Librado et al.

Summary: Analysis of 273 ancient horse genomes reveals that modern domestic horses originated in the Western Eurasian steppes, especially the lower Volga-Don region. The domestication of horses led to the rapid expansion of modern domestic horses across Eurasia around 2000 bc, replacing almost all other local populations.

Global donkey and mule populations: Figures and trends

Stuart L. Norris et al.

Summary: This paper provides an update on donkey and mule populations globally, regionally, and at the country level, showing a trend of increasing donkey populations by about 1% per year and decreasing mule populations by about 2% per year. The largest increases in donkey population were observed in sub-Saharan Africa, while the greatest reduction occurred in Eastern Europe, highlighting the influence of socio-economic drivers on changes in equid populations.

Ancient Mitogenomes Provide New Insights into the Origin and Early Introduction of Chinese Domestic Donkeys

Linying Wang et al.

Summary: Both molecular data and archaeological evidence support an African origin for domestic donkeys, with recent genetic studies suggesting two distinct maternal lineages involved in their initial domestication. The introduction of these lineages into ancient China is dated to at least the opening of the Silk Road in the first century BC. Analysis of mitochondrial genomes indicates population size changes in domestic donkeys over the past 5,000 years.

Historical management of equine resources in France from the Iron Age to the Modern Period

Sebastien Lepetz et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the taxonomic status of horses, mules and donkeys in France from the Iron Age to the Modern period using DNA technology, finding that while horses were the most common and dominant species, mule breeding during Roman times was also important, and donkeys replaced mules in rural and urban commercial and economic centers from the early Middle Ages.

Genomes reveal selective sweeps in kiang and donkey for high-altitude adaptation

Lin Zeng et al.

Summary: Donkeys and kiangs on the Tibetan Plateau have adapted to high-altitude conditions through different biological pathways, with donkeys mainly involving the EGLN1 gene and kiangs mainly involving the EPAS1 gene. There is no evidence of interspecific gene flow between the two species.
