Anaerobic membrane bioreactors for wastewater treatment: Challenges and opportunities

Hyung-Sool Lee et al.

Summary: Anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) are widely used in wastewater treatment, but challenges such as nitrogen and dissolved methane control, membrane fouling, and high costs need to be addressed to facilitate their application. Efforts to decrease capital and O & M costs associated with dissolved methane nitrogen control and membrane fouling are necessary to improve the wide application of AnMBRs.

Hydrogen sulfide affects the performance of a methanogenic bioelectrochemical system used for biogas upgrading

Christy M. Dykstra et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of hydrogen sulfide addition to the cathode headspace on the performance of methanogenic bioelectrochemical systems (BESs). The results showed that low concentrations of H2S can increase methane production, but higher concentrations can lead to inhibition. The transport and oxidation of sulfide in the anode were found to play a crucial role in methanogenic BESs treating sulfide-bearing biogas.

Comparison between novel vibrating ceramic MBR and conventional air-sparging MBR for domestic wastewater treatment: Performance, fouling control and energy consumption

Chuansheng Wang et al.

Summary: The two crucial themes emerging from the application of MBRs in treating domestic wastewater are fouling control and energy demand. The use of a novel vibrating flat-sheet ceramic MBR (VMBR) has shown effective fouling control and energy efficiency in comparison to air-sparging MBR (ASMBR). The VMBR demonstrated superior treatment performance by effectively reducing membrane fouling, decreasing foulant formation, and promoting better fouling mitigation and enhanced dewaterability compared to the ASMBR.
