Energy security versus food security: An analysis of fuel ethanol- related markets using the spillover index and partial wavelet coherence approaches

Jin Guo et al.

Summary: The recent surge in biofuel production has raised concerns about energy and food security. This study analyzes the relationship between the prices of fuel ethanol, gasoline, and corn, finding a positive correlation between gasoline and ethanol prices with corn prices in the short term, a positive correlation between gasoline prices and corn prices in the medium and long terms, and a negative correlation between ethanol prices and corn prices in the medium term.

Connectedness between oil and agricultural commodity prices during tranquil and volatile period. Is crude oil a victim indeed?

Yanpeng Sun et al.

Summary: The increasing financialization of energy and commodity markets presents tradeoffs for investors and consumers, with the long-term study showing bidirectional causality between oil and agricultural commodity prices. Surprisingly, both agricultural commodity prices and oil prices remained immune to shocks during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Structure dependence between oil and agricultural commodities returns: The role of geopolitical risks

Aviral Kumar Tiwari et al.

Summary: The study found a strong co-movement between energy markets and agricultural markets, which is negatively influenced by geopolitical risks. Agricultural commodities, particularly corn, oats, and wheat, are suggested to have the ability to act as a hedge against oil price downturns caused by geopolitical unrest. Additionally, agricultural and oil markets are negatively correlated when agricultural markets are bullish and oil markets are bearish.

Summary: The study reveals an asymmetric relationship between world energy prices and world food prices, with positive changes in energy prices having a greater and longer-lasting impact on agricultural commodity prices. Additionally, wheat and corn prices lead energy prices in the long run, while rice prices lead oil and coal prices.

Rabeh Khalfaoui et al.

Summary: The study found a low significant dependency between energy and nonenergy commodity markets across different frequencies and quantiles during the period from January 1960 to October 2019. Some nonenergy commodity markets were also found to have a neutral relationship with global energy commodity markets.

Agricultural commodity markets and oil prices: An analysis of the dynamic return and volatility connectedness

Zaghum Umar et al.

Summary: This study examines the interdependence between agricultural commodities and oil price shocks in terms of joint return and volatility. It finds that the directional return and volatility connectedness of oil risk shocks are higher than oil demand shocks, particularly during economic crises. The net return connectedness measure significantly increases during major crises, emphasizing differences between transmitters (Canola and Corn) and receivers (Orange Juice, Lean Hog, Sugar and Rubber) in agricultural commodity markets.
