Continuous Synthesis of Glycerol Carbonate by Transesterification of Glycerol with Dimethyl Carbonate Over Fe-La Mixed Oxide Catalysts

Piyusa P. Pattanaik et al.

Summary: The transesterification of glycerol with dimethyl carbonate to produce glycerol carbonate was studied over Fe-La mixed oxide catalysts. Catalysts with different Fe/La molar ratios were synthesized and characterized, showing that a 1:1 ratio and calcination at 550 degrees C resulted in superior activity with 71% yield of glycerol carbonate. The formation of LaFeO3 perovskite structure was found to be responsible for the high activity of the catalyst, which also exhibited unprecedented stability over 100 hours of time on stream analysis.

Waste glycerol derived bio-propanol as a potential extender fuel for compressed ignition engine

Mukul Tomar et al.

Summary: The study investigates the potential of using glycerol-derived bio-propanol as an extender fuel in diesel/gasoline blends, with promising results showing improved engine performance, higher ignition delay, and heat release rate compared to diesel. By increasing the share of gasoline and bio-propanol in the blend, there is up to a 5% increase in brake thermal efficiency and a significant reduction in harmful exhaust emissions. Furthermore, NOx emissions were lower than diesel across all fuel blends, with the D40:G30:P30 blend showing the maximum reductions in NOx, HC, CO, and smoke emissions.
