Microbial fuel cell scale-up options: Performance evaluation of membrane (c-MFC) and membrane-less (s-MFC) systems under different feeding regimes

Xavier Alexis Walter et al.

Summary: In this study, the performance and efficiency of ceramic microbial fuel cells (c-MFCs) and self-stratifying microbial fuel cells (s-MFCs) under similar feeding conditions were compared. The results showed that c-MFCs displayed constant performance independently from the hydraulic retention time (HRT) and had high energy conversion efficiency at longer HRT. On the other hand, the performance of s-MFCs was correlated with HRT, with the best performance achieved under short HRT. However, the energy conversion efficiency of s-MFCs remained constant regardless of HRT.

Ceramic-microbial fuel cell (C-MFC) for waste water treatment: A mini review

Anina James

Summary: Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a bio-electrochemical system that uses electrogenic bacteria to generate electricity. By utilizing wastewater as feed, MFC can generate clean electricity while treating the wastewater. However, there are challenges in scalability and commercialization of this technology, which can be overcome by the use of ceramics. Ceramics can provide chemical and structural stability as separators, chassis, or electrodes in MFCs, and they are low-cost, eco-friendly, and readily available.

Effectiveness of biophotovoltaics system modified with fuller-clay composite separators for chromium removal

K. Gunaseelan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of biophotovoltaics (BPVs) with clay separators modified with different proportions of Fuller's earth-material (FEM) for improved cation exchange capacity. The clay separator modified with 15% FEM exhibited the highest peak power density, as well as high rates of organic matter removal and Cr(VI) reduction. Electrochemical analyses confirmed that FEM provides cationic sites that enhance proton transfer rate. Additionally, membrane characterization showed high proton transfer coefficient and low membrane resistance in the FEM-15% separator. This low-cost separator demonstrated high power outputs and long-term stability, making it a viable alternative to expensive polymeric membranes for field-scale applications.
