Optimisation and performance prediction of photosynthetic biogas upgrading using a bubble column

Archishman Bose et al.

Summary: This study aims to optimize the bubble column component in the photosynthetic biogas upgrading system, and provides optimization conditions for liquid inlet pH, alkalinity, superficial gas velocity, and liquid to gas flow rate. These results can improve the overall process performance.

A comparative evaluation of design factors on bubble column operation in photosynthetic biogas upgrading

Archishman Bose et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively compared seven design factors and found that pH and liquid to gas flow rate were the most critical factors affecting biomethane composition, with effects on oxygen content up to 90%. pH and liquid to gas flow rate had the most impactful interactive effect.

Current Status of the Algae Production Industry in Europe: An Emerging Sector of the Blue Bioeconomy

Rita Araujo et al.

Summary: The EU Bioeconomy Strategy is aimed at supporting the sustainable growth of EU bio-based sectors, including algae production. This study reveals significant gaps in knowledge about algae production in Europe, but also highlights the potential of the sector. Algae and Spirulina biomass is primarily used for food and food-related applications, with technological, regulatory, and market barriers limiting further development despite the considerable potential for sustainable growth in the European algae sector.

Eco-design of spirulina solar cultivation: Key aspects to reduce environmental impacts using Life Cycle Assessment

Camilo Duran Quintero et al.

Summary: This study investigates the environmental impacts of Spirulina production through a modeled production scenario combined with Morris sensitivity analysis. It finds a large variability in global warming potential depending on key parameters such as thermal regulation, setpoint temperature, and production period. By avoiding thermal regulation impacts and increasing biomass productivity, it is possible to reduce the global warming potential per unit of biomass. Expanding the cultivation period under suitable solar conditions can also contribute to higher biomass growth.

A Circular Approach for Making Fischer-Tropsch E-fuels and E-chemicals From Biogas Plants in Europe

Marco Marchese et al.

Summary: This study explores the potential of utilizing biogas and digestate waste streams in Europe to produce synthetic Fischer-Tropsch waxes through carbon capture and utilization routes. The estimated available carbon dioxide in Europe is 33.9 Mt(CO2)/year, with approximately 10.95 Mt(CO2)/year ready-to-use. Utilizing the carbon potential of biogas plants in Europe can cover up to 79% of the global wax demand.

Decarbonising ships, planes and trucks: An analysis of suitable low-carbon fuels for the maritime, aviation and haulage sectors

Nathan Gray et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the shipping, aviation and haulage sectors and a range of low-carbon energy carriers that can be used to decarbonise them, highlighting the potential of biomethane and hydrogen as alternatives to diesel. Energy density issues preclude the use of batteries in shipping, leading to a focus on energy dense liquids or compressed gaseous fuels like methanol. Regulations and aircraft design mean that commercial aviation is dependant on drop-in jet fuels, with power-to-liquid fuels being deemed the most suitable option.
