COVID-19-associated acute kidney injury patients treated with renal replacement therapy in the intensive care unit: A multicenter study in SAo Paulo, Brazil

Farid Samaan et al.

Summary: AKI-RRT associated with COVID-19 occurred in patients with a heavy burden of comorbidities and had a high mortality rate. The number of organ dysfunctions at admission and RRT efficiency were independent factors associated with mortality. A significant proportion of survivors were discharged while still dependent on RRT.

Under-recognition of Acute Kidney Injury after Cardiac Surgery in the ICU Impedes Early Detection and Prevention

Moritz Schanz et al.

Summary: There is a significant difference between the coded and real incidence of AKI after cardiac surgery, with a low conformity to KDIGO recommendations. Postoperative management lacks awareness and control of potential risk factors for AKI.

The effects of acute kidney injury in a multicenter cohort of high-risk surgical patients

Henrique Tadashi Katayama et al.

Summary: Patients who develop post-operative acute kidney injury (AKI) have a poor prognosis, especially when undergoing high-risk surgery. AKI is strongly associated with 28-day mortality, longer ICU and hospital stay. Risk factors for developing AKI post-operatively include pre-operative anemia, higher SAPS 3, post-operative vasopressor use, post-operative infection, and the need for reoperation.

Outcomes of critically ill patients with acute kidney injury in COVID-19 infection: an observational study

Rodrigo Bezerra et al.

Summary: AKI is common during COVID-19 infection, with varying mortality rates. Critically ill patients with both SARS and AKI had high mortality, largely determined by the need for mechanical ventilation and vasopressors rather than AKI severity.
