Modeling NaTech-related domino effects in process clusters: A network-based approach

Meng Lan et al.

Summary: This paper addresses the issue of domino effects in process clusters and proposes a simulation and evaluation tool that considers the uncertainty of primary accidents triggered by natural hazards. It also develops a network-based model to analyze the NaTech-related domino effects. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can be applied to large-scale process clusters and accurately describe the role of each unit at different levels.

Analysis of simplification in Markov state-based models for reliability assessment of complex safety systems

Qingzhu Liang et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a method for simplifying Markov state-based models for reliability assessment of complex safety systems, by decomposing the system into independent sub-systems and using the failure rates of these sub-systems to build a simplified model. The results of sensitivity analysis show a deviation of reliabilities not higher than 0.0021%, and the validation metric indicates a high level of agreement between the simplified and full models.

Fatality risk estimation for industrialized urban areas considering multi-hazard domino effects triggered by earthquakes

Francesca Celano et al.

Summary: This paper explores the coexistence of industrial facilities and urban centres resulting from the rapid growth of the built environment, as well as the impact of multi-hazard domino effects on fatality risk. By decomposing the problem into sub-problems and utilizing simplified probabilistic models coupled with the Monte Carlo method, the study focuses on the significant underestimation of fatality risk in industrialized urban areas when multi-hazard domino effects are disregarded. The importance of accounting for these effects is highlighted, with potential for improvement through enhanced models by different engineering teams.

Assessment of safety barrier performance in the mitigation of domino scenarios caused by Natech events

Alessio Misuri et al.

Summary: The study proposes a novel approach to evaluate the performance modification of safety barriers and protection systems during natural hazards, as well as the resulting change in frequency of secondary technological scenarios. By considering the cascading effects triggered by natural hazards and degradation of safety barrier performance, the study uses layer of protection analysis and event tree analysis to quantify and assess overall escalation scenarios.

A dynamic multi-agent approach for modeling the evolution of multi-hazard accident scenarios in chemical plants

Chao Chen et al.

Summary: The study developed a dynamic methodology called Dynamic Graph Monte Carlo (DGMC) to model the evolution of multi-hazard accident scenarios, showing that risk may be underestimated if the spatial-temporal evolution of multi-hazard scenarios is neglected. Vapor cloud explosion (VCEs) may result in more severe damage than fire, and safety distances based solely on fire hazards are insufficient to prevent VCEs damage.
