Biosynthesis of Tasikamides via Pathway Coupling and Diazonium-Mediated Hydrazone Formation

Guang-Lei Ma et al.

Summary: Naturally occurring hydrazones are rare, but widely used in the synthesis of organic compounds and functional materials. In this study, a novel family of microbial metabolites, tasikamides, was discovered. These tasikamides have a unique cyclic pentapeptide scaffold and contain a hydrazone group. The biosynthesis of tasikamides was found to require two gene clusters, one for the cyclic peptide scaffold and another for the synthesis of alkyl 5-hydroxylanthranilate. The findings revealed a novel mechanism for the formation of specialized metabolites through the coupling of two biosynthetic pathways.

Reversible Controlling the Supramolecular Chirality of Side Chain Azobenzene Polymers: Chiral Induction and Modulation

Guangyao Li et al.

Summary: Chirality plays a vital role in the design of new chiroptical smart materials, and the induction and modulation of supramolecular chirality with feasible techniques is of great value. In this study, two types of azobenzene side-chain polymers were synthesized, and the length of spacer and azobenzene chromophores were found to be crucial in chirality transfer and modulation. The supramolecular chiral arrangement of one polymer could be completely controlled and reversibly modulated, while the chiroptical properties of the other polymer could be reversibly modulated by UV light and thermal annealing treatment. These findings provide insights for designing photo-switchable functional materials.

Synthesis of arylhydrazone-based molecular switches using aryldiazonium silica sulfate nanocomposites and analysis of their isomerization

Amin Zarei et al.

Summary: A fast and efficient method for the synthesis of arylhydrazones using aryldiazonium silica sulfate nanocomposites and different substrates in water at room temperature has been reported, with yields ranging from 77-87%. The E/Z isomerization of arylhydrazones can be controlled by rotating the hydrazone C-N bond and is influenced by the polarity of the solvents. Density functional theory calculations confirmed the stability of Z isomers in DMSO, with Z isomers having higher dipole moments than E isomers in most cases. Temperature was found to have no significant effect on the E-Z isomerization in CDCl3 and DMSO-d6.

From Monolayer to Multilayer: Perylenediimide Diazonium Derivative Acting Either as a Growth Inhibitor or a Growth Enhancer

Viacheslav Shkirskiy et al.

Summary: Fine control of electrografting kinetics of diazonium salts is achieved in this study by adjusting the applied potential for precise tuning of surface coverage of PDI moieties. The surface functionalization can be restricted to a monolayer or a multilayer in a robust and elegant manner, obeying different kinetics of electrografting. Experimental observations are supported by in situ spectroelectrochemical investigations and numerical simulations to propose a tentative mechanistic scheme.

Polymerization-Induced Helicity Inversion Driven by Stacking Modes and Self-Assembly Pathway Differentiation

Xiaoxiao Cheng et al.

Summary: The study reports a new method for dynamically inducing stereoisomerization of polymer molecules through in-situ polymerization without the need for external stimuli. Multiple helicity inversions and intriguing helix-helix transitions occur during polymerization, confirmed to be mediated by the transition between functionality-oriented pi-pi stacking, H-, and J-aggregation.

Transfer, Amplification, Storage, and Complete Self-Recovery of Supramolecular Chirality in an Achiral Polymer System

Tengfei Miao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that partially cross-linked azobenzene units, in combination with the self-assembly of Azo units and terminal hydroxyl groups in polymer side chains, can fully recover the destroyed helical superstructure in an achiral nematic polymer system. The stored chiral information can trigger perfect chiral self-recovery behavior even after being destroyed by UV light, heat, and solvents, paving the way for producing novel chiroptical materials with reversible chirality from achiral sources.
