Accelerated Discovery and Design of Ultralow Lattice Thermal Conductivity Materials Using Chemical Bonding Principles

Jiangang He et al.

Summary: An effective strategy of weakening interatomic interactions and suppressing lattice thermal conductivity based on chemical bonding principles is presented, leading to the discovery of 30 compounds with (ultra)low lattice thermal conductivities by screening the local coordination environments of crystalline compounds. This work not only provides insights into the physical origin of low lattice thermal conductivity in a large family of copper/silver-based compounds, but also offers an efficient approach to discover and design materials with targeted thermal transport properties.

Anisotropic thermal and electrical transport properties induced high thermoelectric performance in an Ir2Cl2O2 monolayer

Qiang Fan et al.

Summary: The translation of the passage is as follows: In recent years, the energy crisis and global warming have become urgent problems that need to be solved. Thermoelectric materials have the potential to convert heat energy into electrical energy without causing air pollution. High-throughput calculations are used to screen potential thermoelectric materials. This paper combines first-principles calculations with the semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory to estimate the thermoelectric performance of monolayer Ir2Cl2O2. The research shows that Ir2Cl2O2 exhibits highly anisotropic thermoelectric properties and confirms the feasibility of screening excellent thermoelectric materials through high-throughput calculations.

Enhanced thermoelectric performance by lone-pair electrons and bond anharmonicity in the two-dimensional Ge2Y2 family of materials with Y = N, P, As, or Sb

Ao Lou et al.

Summary: Using density functional theory and the Boltzmann transport equation, the charge, thermal transport, and thermoelectric properties of two-dimensional Ge2Y2 (Y = N, P, As, or Sb) monolayers were studied. The lone-pair electrons have a significant influence on the lattice thermal conductivity, leading to ultralow thermal conductivity. This provides a new mechanism for designing and optimizing 2D thermoelectric materials with high thermoelectric conversion efficiency.

Boosting Thermoelectric Performance of 2D Transition-Metal Dichalcogenides by Complex Cluster Substitution: The Role of Octahedral Au6 Clusters

Ning Wang et al.

Summary: The concept of element substitution has been a successful strategy for tuning the physical properties of materials, but it is physically limited by atomic size mismatch. In this study, complex cluster substitution of introducing octahedral Au-6 clusters into a TMD monolayer showed higher phonon scattering frequency and lower lattice thermal conductivity. The introduction of Au-6 clusters optimized electronic structures, balanced the relationship between Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity, and improved the power factor, leading to a high thermoelectric figure of merit ZT.

Chemical Bonding Origin of the Thermoelectric Power Factor in Half-Heusler Semiconductors

Summary: In intermetallic semiconductors with the cubic Half-Heusler structure, strong covalent bonding between the formal cation and anion was identified, invalidating the traditional Zintl chemistry distinction. This covalence significantly affects the band structure, thermoelectric properties, and response properties of the materials, leading to improved thermoelectric properties in materials that deviate least from the Zintl concept.

Novel IV-V-VI semiconductors with ultralow lattice thermal conductivity

Yu Gan et al.

Summary: A group of 56 novel layered semiconducting IV-V-VI compounds with ultralow lattice thermal conductivity have been predicted through high-throughput ab initio calculations. These compounds exhibit intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity at room temperature, attributed to avoided-crossing behavior between optical phonons and acoustic modes, leading to significant reduction of phonon group velocities and inducing strong anharmonic phonon-phonon scattering. This work provides a new family of semiconductors with exceptionally low lattice thermal conductivity and emphasizes the design of new low-kappa(l) materials.
