The Dual Functions of Defect-Rich Carbon Nanotubes as Both Conductive Matrix and Efficient Mediator for Li-S Batteries

Jicheng Jiang et al.

Summary: Introducing defects in carbon nanotubes to anchor polysulfides and accelerate electrochemical reactions can dramatically improve cycling and rate performance of Li-S batteries. The defect-rich carbon has a higher binding energy with polysulfides, allowing for cycling stability up to 1000 cycles even under high sulfur loading and lean electrolyte conditions. This new design strategy may lead to mediator-like carbon materials with good conductivity and high catalytic activity for Li-S batteries.

Lignin derived hierarchical porous carbon with extremely suppressed polyselenide shuttling for high-capacity and long-cycle-life lithium-selenium batteries

Pengfei Lu et al.

Summary: A low-cost strategy for scalable fabrication of lignin derived hierarchical porous carbon (LHPC) as a new high-loading Se host for high-capacity and long-term cycling Li-Se batteries is reported. The resulting LHPC exhibits a three-dimensional hierarchically porous structure, high specific surface area, and hetero-atom doping, which effectively confine Se particles and offer chemical binding sites. Li-Se batteries based on Se@LHPC demonstrate high capacity and low capacity fading rate, with theoretical simulation confirming the strong affinity of selenides on LHPC sites effectively mitigating Se losing. This strategy offers new opportunities for high-capacity and long-life Li-Se batteries.

Constructed conductive CoSe2 nanoarrays as efficient electrocatalyst for high-performance Li-S battery

Yue Qiu et al.

Summary: The C@CoSe2/S electrode demonstrates a high specific capacity of 1264 mAh.g(-1) with a low capacity decay of 0.051% per cycle at 0.2C over 200 cycles, due to the high conductivity, strong chemisorption, promising catalytic capacity and unique nanowire array structure. The battery delivers outstanding capacity retention over 1000 cycles at 5C with a low decay rate of approximately 0.026% per cycle, showing stable areal capacity even at higher sulfur loading. The improved electrochemical performance can be attributed to the catalytic activation of CoSe2 on polysulfides, as revealed by experimental data and theoretical calculations.
