Holocene relative sea-level changes in the eastern part of Pomeranian Bay and the Szczecin Lagoon, Southern Baltic Sea

Pawel Sydor et al.

Summary: The study reconstructed the sea-level changes in the eastern part of the Baltic Sea and the Szczecin Lagoon over the past 8500 years, revealing a gradual slowdown in the rate of sea-level rise and stable growth in the last 5000 years. Analysis of the data suggests the occurrence of extreme events disrupting the regular pattern of sea-level rise.

Volcanic stratospheric sulfur injections and aerosol optical depth during the Holocene (past 11 500 years) from a bipolar ice-core array

Michael Sigl et al.

Summary: The injection of sulfur into the stratosphere by volcanic eruptions is the dominant driver of natural climate variability. A new database, HolVol v.1.0, provides estimates of volcanic sulfur injection events for the Holocene, extending the record by 7000 years. The reconstructions reveal a higher number of volcanic eruptions and sulfur injection during the Early Holocene, coinciding with rapid ice sheet retreat. These findings are important for understanding future volcanic activity.

The role of sea-level changes in the evolution of coastal barriers - An example from the southwestern Baltic Sea

Reinhard Lampe et al.

Summary: The formation of coastal barriers in the southwestern Baltic can be divided into four evolutionary stages influenced by the rates of sea-level rise and relations between sediment supply and accommodation space. Over the past 5000 years, the development of barriers in the region has been controlled by climate fluctuations which caused minor variations in sea level, sediment supply, accommodation space, and foredune deposition.

Holocene development of the Vistula Spit (Baltic Sea coast) based on multidisciplinary investigations

Szymon Uscinowicz et al.

Summary: This study investigated the origin of the Vistula Spit and the age of formation of dune ridges. Results show that the oldest dunes began forming around 7000-6000 years ago, with the highest ridges forming around 4000-2000 years ago, and the youngest dunes forming in the past 2000 years.
