Spatial inequalities of retail food stores may determine availability of healthful food choices in a Brazilian metropolis

Summary: This study aimed to examine the impact of economic residential segregation on the food environment. Findings revealed that neighborhoods with high economic segregation had fewer food stores, and were less likely to sell ultra-processed foods and mixed foods compared to integrated neighborhoods.

Availability and placement of healthy and discretionary food in Australian supermarkets by chain and level of socio-economic disadvantage

Summary: The study found that independent stores allocate a greater proportion of shelf space to selected discretionary foods compared to Coles, Woolworths, and Aldi. In the most disadvantaged areas, Coles, Woolworths, and Aldi stores allocated a higher proportion of shelf space to selected discretionary foods. Most staff-assisted checkout displays in all stores and half of end-of-aisle displays included discretionary food, with Aldi featuring less discretionary food compared to other supermarket groups.

While healthfulness scores remained stable in large stores, there was a trend towards increased healthfulness in small stores. Neighborhood deprivation did not affect overall store healthfulness.
