Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) plus synthesised two-dimensional mammography (s2D) in breast cancer screening is associated with higher cancer detection and lower recalls compared to digital mammography (DM) alone: results of a systematic review and meta-analysis

Sylvia H. Heywang-Koebrunner et al.

Summary: Compared to DM alone, using DBT plus s2D showed increased cancer detection rates, decreased recall rates, and increased positive predictive values. Interval cancer rates and biopsy rates did not differ, but positive predictive values for recommended biopsies and performed biopsies increased with DBT plus s2D.

Breast Radiation Exposure of 3D Digital Breast Tomosynthesis Compared to Full-Field Digital Mammography in a Clinical Follow-Up Setting

Marcel Opitz et al.

Summary: This study compared the radiation dose delivered by digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) and digital mammography (FFDM) in a clinical follow-up setting. The results showed that the radiation dose was significantly higher for DBT in the mediolateral oblique (MLO) views compared to FFDM, but still below the national diagnostic reference level.

Performance of Digital Breast Tomosynthesis, Synthetic Mammography, and Digital Mammography in Breast Cancer Screening: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Mostafa Alabousi et al.

Summary: The study compared the performance of digital mammography (DM) alone, combined digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) and DM, combined DBT and synthetic 2-dimensional mammography (S2D), and DBT alone in breast cancer screening. The results showed that combined DBT and S2D had the highest CDR and PPV1.

Repeat Screening Outcomes with Digital Breast Tomosynthesis Plus Synthetic Mammography for Breast Cancer Detection: Results from the Prospective Verona Pilot Study

Francesca Caumo et al.

Summary: The study compared the diagnostic accuracy of digital breast tomosynthesis plus synthetic mammography and full-field digital mammography for screening, finding that DBT+SM detected more cancers and reduced the number of stage II or higher cancers at repeat screening compared to FFDM.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Digital Breast Tomosynthesis: Update on Technology, Evidence, and Clinical Practice

Yiming Gap et al.

Summary: Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) is widely adopted in breast imaging for its benefits in detecting invasive cancers, reducing overdiagnosis, improving diagnostic confidence, and decreasing false-positive recalls. Despite longer interpretation time, DBT streamlines diagnostic workflow and improves efficiency.

Digital breast tomosynthesis compared to diagnostic mammographic projections (including magnification) among women recalled at screening mammography: a systematic review for the European Commission Initiative on Breast Cancer (ECIBC)

Carlos Canelo-Aybar et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the replacement of DxMM with DBT in women recalled at screening and found that DBT may have higher sensitivity and specificity compared to DxMM. Using DBT may reduce false-positive results and invasive diagnostic procedures without missing breast cancer cases.
