Tph2 Gene Expression Defines Ethanol Drinking Behavior in Mice

Magdalena Zaniewska et al.

Summary: Indirect evidence supports a link between disrupted serotonin signaling and addictive behaviors. This study found that central serotonin is an important modulator of drinking behavior in mice, but is not required for the antidepressant effects of ethanol.

The placenta-brain-axis

Cheryl S. Rosenfeld

Summary: The placenta is a structurally diverse organ in mammals that not only facilitates exchange of gases and nutrients, but also produces hormones and neurotransmitters influencing maternal physiology and fetal development. Placental responses to in utero stressors may have long-term health outcomes, particularly impacting brain development. This intimate relationship between the placenta and brain has led to the term placenta-brain-axis, which is being studied for its effects on later neurobehavioral disorders.

Serotonin transporter availability in adults with autism-a positron emission tomography study

Max Andersson et al.

Summary: Adult individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) exhibit lower availability of serotonin transporter (5-HTT) in the brain, which is associated with social cognitive test performance. These findings support the role of serotonin in the neurodevelopment of ASD and underscore the importance of continued investigation of the serotonin system to unravel the biology of ASD.

Transient serotonin depletion at adolescence, but not at early infancy, reduced subsequent anxiety-like behavior and alcohol intake in female mice

Fabio Bellia et al.

Summary: The study shows that transient depletion of 5-HT during adolescence may act as a protective factor for the emergence of anxiety disorders and problematic use of alcohol in females.

Serotonin depletion during the postnatal developmental period causes behavioral and cognitive alterations and decreases BDNF level in the brain of rats

Hakimeh Saadati et al.

Summary: The study revealed that serotonin has significant effects on neurodevelopment, cognitive functions, and behavior in rats. Administration of para-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA) during the early postnatal period resulted in impaired short-term novel object recognition memory, increased anxiety-like behaviors, enhanced pain sensitivity, and decreased BDNF levels in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex.

Serotonin depletion reduces both acquisition and expression of context-conditioned fear

S. Melker Hagsater et al.

Summary: The study found that intact serotonergic neurotransmission is important for both the acquisition and expression of conditioned fear. Serotonin depletion significantly reduced the time spent freezing, but administering a serotonin synthesis inhibitor during memory consolidation did not impact the expression of conditioned fear.
