Individuals with the post-traumatic stress disorder process emotions in subcortical regions irrespective of cognitive engagement: a meta-analysis of cognitive and emotional interface

Moon-Soo Lee et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis aimed to understand the brain dysfunction related to emotion and cognition in individuals with PTSD, revealing that individuals with PTSD exhibit overactivation in subcortical regions like the amygdala and striatum when processing emotions. Additionally, underactivation in the anterior cingulate cortex was especially prominent in individuals with PTSD following exposure to emotional stimuli.

Effect of vortioxetine vs. escitalopram on plasma BDNF and platelet serotonin in depressed patients

Anja Dvojkovic et al.

Summary: Escitalopram and vortioxetine are effective antidepressants that target the serotonin system, with vortioxetine having a unique mechanism of action compared to SSRIs. Vortioxetine was found to significantly increase plasma BDNF concentration and decrease platelet 5-HT concentration, while escitalopram mainly reduced platelet 5-HT concentration. Response to vortioxetine was not predicted by baseline BDNF or platelet 5-HT concentration, highlighting the need for further research on the long-term effects and clinical implications.

Moderating Effects of BDNF Genetic Variants and Smoking on Cognition in PTSD Veterans

Gordana Nedic Erjavec et al.

Summary: This study found that cognitive dysfunction in PTSD patients is closely related to diagnosis, BDNF rs56164415 gene, and smoking. BDNF rs56164415 T allele is more common in PTSD patients and associated with cognitive decline.

Higher Serum Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Levels Are Associated With a Lower Risk of Cognitive Decline: A 2-Year Follow Up Study in Community-Dwelling Older Adults

Yoshinori Fujiwara et al.

Summary: The study found that higher serum BDNF levels in older adults were associated with a lower risk of cognitive decline, particularly in terms of executive function. The results suggest that serum BDNF levels may be an important factor in health promotion initiatives targeting cognitive decline prevention in community-dwelling older adults.
