Association between case management and longitudinal decrease in negative symptoms in patients with first episode psychosis: A 2-year follow-up

Post-Psychotic Depression: An Updated Review of the Term and Clinical Implications

Summary: This research reviewed the published literature on post-psychotic depression (PPD) and indicated its clinical importance. Despite its high prevalence, there is little research on PPD. The results suggest that PPD is a distinct entity from secondary effects of antipsychotics, negative symptoms of psychosis, and other clinical disorders. PPD has differential characteristics and important clinical implications such as higher suicide risk and poorer quality of life.

The 'Parma-Early Psychosis' programme: Characterization of help-seekers with first episode psychosis

Summary: Research on the 'Parma-Early Psychosis' (Pr-EP) programme in Italy over a six-year period found that most patients had schizophreniform disorder or schizophrenia, with the majority referred by general practitioners. Patients referred from emergency rooms or general hospitals had a higher percentage of current suicidal ideation. This study demonstrates the feasibility and importance of early intervention in first episode psychosis patients within the Italian public mental health services.

Disorganization in first episode schizophrenia: Treatment response and psychopathological findings from the 2-year follow-up of the Parma Early Psychosis program

Summary: The study aims to investigate the longitudinal stability of disorganized symptoms in young patients with First Episode Schizophrenia (FES) and the association of disorganization with functioning, psychopathology, and Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) treatment components. Findings show that disorganization is positively associated with PANSS negative symptoms, lack of judgment/insight, and positive symptoms representing delusional thought contents, while negatively correlated with GAF scores, and FES patients showed improvement in disorganization symptoms over the 2-year follow-up period, particularly related to individual psychotherapy sessions in the first year of treatment.

Personal Health Budget as a new rehabilitation model for severe mental illness within a caring community: An Italian evaluation study of beneficial effects

Summary: The study found a significant decrease in overall functioning, health outcomes, and psychiatric symptoms over a 24-month follow-up period for patients with severe mental illness receiving Personal Health Budget interventions. Linear regression analysis showed a strong association between Personal Health Budget intervention and long-term reductions in negative symptoms and social problems. These findings support the implementation of a Health of the Nation Outcome Scale approach for severe mental illness patients within the Italian mental health service network.
