γ γ decay as a probe of neutrinoless ββ decay nuclear matrix elements

B. Romeo et al.

Summary: We study the nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) for double gamma (gamma gamma) decay in a range of nuclei and examine their relationship with neutrinoless double-beta (0 nu beta beta) NMEs. Our analysis focuses on double-magnetic dipole transitions and reveals a strong linear correlation between the gamma gamma and 0 nu beta beta NMEs. We find that this correlation holds for gamma gamma transitions driven by spin or orbital angular momentum due to the dominance of zero-coupled nucleon pairs, a feature common to 0 nu beta beta decay. Our findings suggest that future gamma gamma decay measurements have the potential to constrain 0 nu beta beta NMEs.

Indications for a bound tetraneutron

Thomas Faestermann et al.

Summary: In this study, the reaction Li-7(Li-7,C-10) was used to populate states in the tetraneutron. A peak in the energy spectrum of identified C-10, which could not be attributed to a reaction with any other target components, was found to correspond to an excitation energy of 2.93 +/- 0.16MeV in the C-10+4n system. A similar peak was observed under different kinematic conditions. Analysis suggests that this peak is more likely to correspond to the first excited state of C-10 at 3.354MeV and a tetraneutron with a binding energy of +0.42 +/- 0.16MeV.

Single- and Double-Charge Exchange Reactions and Nuclear Matrix Element for Double-Beta Decay

Hiroyasu Ejiri

Summary: This study investigates the impact of nuclear isospin and spin correlations on the double-beta decay (DBD) nuclear matrix element (NME) using single-charge exchange reactions (SCERs) and double-charge exchange reactions (DCERs). The results show that the SCER-NME and DCER-NME are reduced compared to the quasi-particle model NME due to the presence of isospin and spin correlations.

Multinucleon transfer in the 116Cd(20Ne, 20O)116Sn double charge exchange reaction at 306 MeV incident energy

J. L. Ferreira et al.

Summary: This study investigates the competition between the multiple nucleon transfer mechanism and the meson-induced double charge exchange (DCE) process in heavy-ion collisions. The theoretical calculations show that the flux of multinucleon transfer plays a crucial role in isolating the meson-induced DCE contribution in the Cd-116(Ne-20, O-20)Sn-116 reaction, especially when considering the couplings with inelastic states.

Summary: Through experimental and theoretical analysis, this study investigates the competing mechanisms associated with second- or higher-order sequential transfer and/or inelastic processes in the Cd-116(Ne-2(0), F-20)In-116 single charge-exchange reaction. The results show that two-step transfer mechanisms contribute significantly to the total cross section of the reaction, but a relevant fraction is still missing, which is attributed to the direct single charge-exchange mechanism.

Alpha-induced inelastic scattering and alpha-transfer reactions in 12C and 16O within the Algebraic Cluster Model

Jesus Casal et al.

Summary: The study utilizes a molecular algebraic model based on α clusters to describe the inelastic scattering of alpha particles in C-12 and O-16. Optical potentials and inelastic formfactors are obtained by folding densities and transition densities within the model, while one-step and multi-step processes can be included in the calculation. The molecular model with rotations and vibrations provides a reliable description of reactions involving α-cluster degrees of freedom and good results are obtained for the excitation of several low-lying states. Additionally, the expected selection rules for the α-transfer reactions from C-12 and O-16 are briefly discussed within the same model.

The NUMEN Technical Design Report

Francesco Cappuzzello et al.

Summary: The NUMEN project proposes an innovative technique to access nuclear matrix elements through heavy-ion induced Double Charge Exchange reactions, aiming to study the lifetime of double beta decay. Despite being triggered by different types of interactions, similarities in many-body wave functions and transition operators exist between neutrinoless double beta decay and DCE reactions. The upgrade of INFN-LNS facilities, connected to the POTLNSa project, is essential for enabling measurements of DCE cross-section under extremely high beam intensities as required by the NUMEN project.

Ab Initio Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay Matrix Elements for 48Ca, 76Ge, and 82Se

A. Belley et al.

Summary: In this study, basis-space converged neutrinoless beta beta-decay nuclear matrix elements for the lightest candidates Ca-48, Ge-76, and Se-82 were calculated using ab initio methods. It was found that the tensor component is non-negligible in Ge-76 and Se-82, leading to nuclear matrix elements that are overall 25%-45% smaller than those obtained from the phenomenological shell model. While further developments are needed for a more accurate determination of final matrix elements with uncertainties, this work paves the way for a first-principles calculation of neutrinoless beta beta decay in all relevant nuclei for large-scale searches.

Initial State Interaction for the 20Ne

Summary: Double charge exchange reactions can provide insight into nuclear matrix elements relevant to neutrinoless double-beta decay, requiring a detailed understanding of reaction mechanisms and initial/final-state interactions. Experimental data and theoretical calculations suggest that couplings with 2(1)(+) states in the coupled-channel approach are crucial for describing the data across transferred momenta range. This has implications for analyzing other quasi-elastic reaction channels in the systems under study.
