Potential influence of microorganisms on the corrosion of carbon steel in the French high- and intermediate-level long-lived radioactive waste disposal context

Erwan Diler et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the possibility of microbially influenced corrosion (MIC) on carbon steel in high-level radioactive waste disposal. It investigated the corrosiveness of different environments at varying temperatures and utilized gravimetric and real-time monitoring methods. Microbial analyses including cultural and molecular characterizations supplemented the corrosion data.

Effect of fracture voids on the swelling behaviour of Callovo-Oxfordian claystone

Feng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of fracture voids on the swelling behavior of COx claystone by simulating fracture voids with limited grains and conducting swelling tests. The results showed that water infiltrating into the sample with fracture voids caused grain collapse before claystone swelling. The presence of fracture voids influenced both the axial strain and swelling pressure of the claystone.

Feasibility of constructing a full-scale radioactive high-level waste disposal cell and characterization of its thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior

Frederic Bumbieler et al.

Summary: The French National Radioactive Waste Management Agency (Andra) is conducting a research program at the Meuse/HauteMarne Underground Research Laboratory (MHM URL) to demonstrate the feasibility of constructing and operating a High Level Waste (HLW) disposal facility in the Callovo-Oxfordian (COx) claystone formation. The ALC1604 experiment is an in-situ heating test replicating a full-scale HLW disposal cell, studying the response of the cell and the surrounding rock under thermal loading. The lessons learned from this experiment have provided valuable feedback towards implementing new fullscale heating experiments consistent with a new benchmark concept.
