An experimental and numerical study on the age depended bond-slip behavior between nano-silica modified carbon fibers and cementitious matrices

Huanyu Li et al.

Summary: Electrophoretic deposition of nano-silica on carbon fiber surfaces is demonstrated as an effective approach for improving the interfacial bond properties between the fibers and cementitious matrices. Experimental results show that the interfacial adhesion at the fiber-matrix interface significantly improves with curing time, attributed to the formation of C-S-H gel near the fiber surface. Additionally, a finite element model incorporating a discrete cohesive concept successfully captures the experimental pullout behavior.

Phase-field fracture incorporating cohesive adhesion failure mechanisms within the Representative Crack Element framework

Bo Yin et al.

Summary: This paper presents the cohesive fracture model within the Representative Crack Element framework, incorporating phase-field modeling. A traction-separation law is used to describe cohesive adhesion on the crack surfaces. The phase-field degradation function provides a realistic material status for different loading states, showing cohesive adhesion failure for opening or shearing cracks and physical material contact behavior for closing cracks. The unknown crack deformations are resolved using a minimization algorithm based on virtual power principles.

Fabric-Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (FRCM) Carbon Yarns with Different Surface Treatments Embedded in a Cementitious Mortar: Mechanical and Durability Studies

Francesca Bompadre et al.

Summary: Nowadays, FRCM systems are widely used for strengthening and retrofitting existing masonry and concrete structures. The bond between the reinforcing fabric and the inorganic matrix plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of these systems. However, the chemical-physical compatibility between fabric yarns and inorganic matrices is often poor, especially when dry carbon fibers are used. This paper explores different surface treatments to enhance the interface compatibility, including pre-impregnation with epoxy resin, nano-silica coating, and fiber oxidation. Tensile tests and pull-out tests were conducted to evaluate the effects of these treatments on the mechanical properties of carbon yarns, both before and after exposure to aggressive environments.

Tannic acid/ethanolamine modification of PE fiber surfaces for improved interactions with cementitious matrices

Ali Bashiri Rezaie et al.

Summary: This study investigates the surface functionalization of polyethylene fibers using tannic acid/ethanolamine and the enhancement of bonding characteristics in cement-based matrices. The results showed notable improvements in interfacial shear strength, pullout energy, crack-bridging force, and crack-bridging energy for the modified fibers compared to the raw fibers. The tannic acid/ethanolamine coatings not only enhanced the bonding between the fibers and the cement matrix, but also slightly improved the mechanical properties of the fibers.

Influences of surface treatment on the mechanical performances of carbon and basalt textiles-reinforced concretes under harsh environments

Shuaicheng Guo et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the influence of surface treatments on the elevated temperature resistance and durability performance of carbon textile-reinforced concrete (CTRC) and basalt textile-reinforced concrete (BTRC). The results showed that nano-silica treatment improved the high-temperature resistance and aging resistance of both CTRC and BTRC specimens in the simulated marine environment. The use of a silane coupling agent further enhanced the improvement effect.

Mechanical Behavior and Microstructure of Graphene Oxide Electrodeposited Carbon Fiber Reinforced Cement-Based Materials

Siyue Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, graphene oxide (GO) was prepared using an improved Hummers' method, and GO-carbon fiber (GO-CF) hybrid fibers were made through electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and SEM showed that the surface modification of CF with GO improved the dispersion of CF in the cement matrix and enhanced the interface bond between CF and the cement matrix. Mechanical tests demonstrated that the compressive and flexural strength of the cement matrix composites were significantly improved by GO. The addition of CF also improved the flexural strength, but not the compressive strength, of the cement matrix composites.

Role of pH value on electrophoretic deposition of nano-silica onto carbon fibers for a tailored bond behavior with cementitious matrices

Huanyu Li et al.

Summary: The article investigates the effects of pH conditions during electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of nano-silica onto carbon fiber surfaces. The study reveals that an acidic environment enables the most pronounced and homogeneous nano-silica coating on the carbon fiber surfaces, leading to improved bond properties with cementitious matrices. The results suggest that the reaction between a high number of nano-silica particles and calcium hydroxide forms calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gel, intensifying the interfacial transition zone and increasing the bond properties.

Application of intrinsic cement-based sensor for traffic detections of human motion and vehicle speed

Wenkui Dong et al.

Summary: In this study, the self-sensing performance of smart pavement with embedded cement-based sensors was investigated experimentally. The developed cement-based sensors exhibited excellent piezoresistivity due to the well-dispersed carbon nanofibers. The smart mortar slab with embedded sensors demonstrated the ability to monitor compression force, human motion, and vehicle speed accurately. The strong bonding between the cement-based sensors and the mortar slab ensured effective force transmission. These findings will contribute to the practical applications of cement-based sensors in smart concrete infrastructures.

Micro-mechanical model for ultra-high strength and ultra-high ductility cementitious composites (UHS-UHDCC)

Dong-Yi Lei et al.

Summary: This study shows that the slip-hardening parameter (beta) of UHS-UHDCC increases with the inclination of PE fiber, and introduces the slip-hardening increasing coefficient (omega) to correct the ECC model. A micro-mechanical model of single PE fiber pullout is proposed, and the debonding behavior of PE fiber is defined as 'physical debonding'. Verification of the proposed micro-mechanical model through load-displacement and stress-opening curves supports the realization of multi-cracking strain hardening behavior in UHS-UHDCC.
