Airborne environmental DNA for terrestrial vertebrate community monitoring

Christina Lynggaard et al.

Summary: Biodiversity monitoring at the community scale is critical for understanding the impacts of environmental and human activities on natural ecosystems. This study demonstrates that airborne environmental DNA (eDNA) can be a powerful tool for studying and monitoring terrestrial vertebrate communities. The researchers collected air samples from different locations in a zoo and used eDNA analysis to detect diverse vertebrate species. They found that the distance to the sampling device and animal biomass influenced the detection probability.

Ecology, evolution and spillover of coronaviruses from bats

Manuel Ruiz-Aravena et al.

Summary: Bats are known to carry a variety of coronaviruses and have been identified as prime reservoir hosts for emerging viruses. Since the first SARS epidemic in 2002, the understanding of bats as key hosts of coronaviruses has rapidly advanced. There are critical knowledge gaps regarding bat coronaviruses, and filling these gaps may help prevent the next pandemic.

Summary: White-tailed deer, particularly in Iowa, have been found to be susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection and show evidence of human-to-deer transmission. This discovery highlights the need for a One Health approach to better understand the ecology, molecular evolution, and dissemination of the virus.

Climate change increases cross-species viral transmission risk

Colin J. Carlson et al.

Summary: At least 10,000 virus species have the potential to infect humans. However, changes in climate and land use may lead to viral sharing among different species of wild mammals, increasing the risk of zoonotic diseases. Using simulations, researchers found that future viral sharing could occur in high elevation areas, biodiversity hotspots, and regions with high human population density in Asia and Africa. Bats, due to their ability to disperse, are the main contributors to novel viral sharing and are likely to facilitate future disease emergence in humans.

The molecular epidemiology of multiple zoonotic origins of SARS-CoV-2

Jonathan E. Pekar et al.

Summary: Understanding the circumstances that lead to pandemics is crucial for their prevention. In this study, the genomic diversity of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) early in the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic was analyzed. The results suggest that before February 2020, SARS-CoV-2 likely consisted of two distinct viral lineages, labeled A and B. Through phylodynamic rooting methods and epidemic simulations, it was revealed that these lineages were the result of at least two separate cross-species transmission events into humans. The findings indicate that widespread circulation of SARS-CoV-2 in humans before November 2019 is unlikely, and define the narrow time window between the first jump of SARS-CoV-2 into humans and the first reported cases of COVID-19.

Summary: The US has experienced a series of epidemics in the past five decades, but none has been as severe as COVID-19. The pandemic has exposed critical weaknesses in US pandemic preparedness and domestic leadership, with public health measures being undermined and public confidence in a science-based public health system reduced. Furthermore, a large number of citizens without access to healthcare have been disproportionately affected by the virus.

Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 on mink farms between humans and mink and back to humans

Bas B. Oude Munnink et al.

Summary: Animal experiments have shown that various animals can be infected by SARS-CoV-2, with evidence of animal-to-human transmission within mink farms. Investigation into mink farm outbreaks revealed that the virus was initially introduced by humans and has since evolved, causing transmission between mink farms. Despite enhanced biosecurity measures and culling, transmission occurred between farms in three large clusters with unknown modes of transmission, resulting in a high percentage of infections among mink farm residents and employees.
