Decoupled oxygenation of the Ediacaran ocean and atmosphere during the rise of early animals

Wei Shi et al.

Summary: This study utilizes carbon and sulfur isotope records from South China, Oman, and USA-Mexico to investigate the atmospheric and oceanic oxygenation in the Ediacaran Period. The results show that there is a decoupling between oceanic and atmospheric oxygenation during this period, with atmospheric oxygen levels rising continuously while marine sulfate concentrations remaining relatively stable before a large pulse increase. These findings suggest that the rise in atmospheric oxygen may not have resulted in widespread deep-ocean oxygenation during the early Ediacaran, and instead, episodic seafloor oxygenation accompanied the radiation of the Ediacaran Biota.

The Shibantan Lagerstatte: insights into the Proterozoic-Phanerozoic transition

Shuhai Xiao et al.

Summary: The Shibantan Lagerstatte in South China is a well-known example of Ediacaran fossil assemblages preserved in marine carbonate rocks, dominated by benthic organisms. The fossils provide important data for understanding ecological interactions among mobile bilaterians, sessile benthic Ediacara-type organisms, and microbial mats, shedding light on the decline of the Ediacara biota and the expansion of bilaterian bioturbation and mobility across the Proterozoic-Phanerozoic transition.

Revisiting Ediacaran sulfur isotope chemostratigraphy with in situ nanoSIMS analysis of sedimentary pyrite

Wei Wang et al.

Summary: The reconstructions of ancient sulfur cycling and redox conditions often rely on sulfur isotope measurements of sedimentary rocks and minerals. The Ediacaran strata show a wide range of values in sulfur isotope differences between carbonate-associated sulfate and sedimentary pyrite, indicating changes in marine sulfate reservoir size in space and time. However, bulk measurements of sedimentary pyrite could be misleading due to different formation processes, leading to a mixed signal of syndepositional and diagenetic processes.

Dickinsonia from the Ediacaran Dengying Formation in the Yangtze Gorges area, South China

Xiao-Peng Wang et al.

Summary: The stratigraphic distribution of Ediacara-type fossils in the Shibantan Member indicates a unique preservation of both the White Sea and Nama assemblages. The new data presented suggests that Dickinsonia had wider paleogeographic and paleoenvironmental distributions, implying strong dispersal capability and environmental tolerance.

Hydrological controls on marine chemistry in the Cryogenian Nanhua Basin (South China)

Meng Cheng et al.

Summary: The seawater chemistry of the Cryogenian Nanhua Basin was significantly influenced by the fluxes of freshwater and seawater, with black shale deposition associated with low salinity and Mn-carbonate deposition linked to higher salinity. During anoxic depositional intervals, enhanced decay of organic matter led to C-12-enriched dissolved inorganic carbon precipitating in Mn-carbonates.
