A hybrid multiphase model accounting for particle agglomeration for coarse-grid simulation of dense solid flow inside large-scale cyclones

Mohamadali Mirzaei et al.

Summary: This study developed a hybrid multiphase model (Dense Discrete Phase Model, DDPM) coupled with an agglomeration model and a sub-grid drag model to simulate industrial-scale cyclones with high solid loading. The model was validated using experimental results from a pilot-scale cyclone with a diameter of 1.6 m, and it successfully captured key trends such as improvement in separation efficiency and reduction in pressure drop with increased particle load. The study concluded that including the agglomeration model is crucial for accurate predictions of pressure drop and separation efficiency, especially for cases involving very fine particles (d < 15 μm), while the sub-grid drag modification improves the prediction of separation efficiency.

Numerical Simulation of the Pilot-Scale High-Density Circulating Fluidized Bed Riser

Min Wang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a simulation model for high-density circulating fluidized beds (HDCFB) and empirically modifies existing solid pressure correlation to consider different clustering behaviors. The effects of gas velocity and solid circulation rate on cluster formation and gas-solid flow are studied, revealing differences between low-density CFBs and HDCFBs.

Study on the erosive wear of the gas-solid flow of compressor blade in an aero-turboshaft engine based on the Finnie model

Chao Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a Ti-6Al-4V alloy erosive wear test bench was designed to test particle velocities using particle image velocimetry (PIV) at different air pressures. A Finnie wear model was parameterized for compressor blade materials, and the gas-solid flow of a turboshaft engine pre-1.5 stage compressor blade was analyzed. The results showed areas of wear concentrated on certain surfaces of rotor and stator blades, with maximum wear rate concentration near specific regions of both blades.

Comparative CFD modeling of a bubbling bed using a Eulerian-Eulerian two-fluid model (TFM) and a Eulerian-Lagrangian dense discrete phase model (DDPM)

Muhammad Adnan et al.

Summary: The study compared the performance of Eulerian-Eulerian and Eulerian-Lagrangian numerical approaches in describing the hydrodynamic behavior of a pilot-scale bubbling bed reactor. The sub-grid drag correction based on the energy minimization and multiscale theory was found to be the key modeling parameter for both models. Both models predicted similar hydrodynamics behavior, with TFM achieving better accuracy in terms of axial and radial solids concentration profiles. The grid size analysis showed that DDPM generated a better grid-independent solution than TFM, making it a suitable candidate for large-scale industrial applications on coarser grids. Other parameters like time-step, time-averaging interval, specularity coefficient, restitution coefficient, reflection coefficient, and numbers of parcels had minor effects on the overall hydrodynamics behavior of the reactor.

Surface erosion due to particle-surface interactions-A review

Rahul Tarodiya et al.

Summary: Surface erosion is a critical factor in the design and operation of components in particulate handling services. Despite decades of research, the complete phenomenon of surface erosion remains unknown. Understanding erosion mechanisms, factors affecting erosion rate, and modeling approaches are essential to enhance component service life. The article discusses various erosion mechanisms, measurement technologies, test methods, theoretical and empirical models, numerical modeling methods, difficulties, recent progress, and future research needs in erosion prediction.
