Protective coating of highly porous alginate aerogel particles in a Wurster fluidized bed

Isik Sena Akgun et al.

Summary: Alginate aerogel particles were successfully coated with a copovidone and hydroxypropyl cellulose based polymer in a Wurster fluidized bed. The results indicate that the pores of aerogels were not damaged during the process. Changing bed temperature led to significant changes in coating thickness whereas both bed temperature and atomizing pressure affected coating layer surface morphology. The smoothest coating layer surface and the highest coating efficiency were achieved at 50 degrees C with 1.7 bar atomizing pressure.

Summary: The use of fluidized bed coating to cover Suglets® solid support from Colorcon with an extract of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cell wall demonstrates that there is no single combination of levels of each factor that can provide good results in terms of the performance of the coating process.

Optimization of Wurster fluid bed coating: Mathematical model validated against pharmaceutical production data

Jiri Kolar et al.

Summary: Wurster fluid bed coating is an effective method for manufacturing pharmaceutical pellets with specific characteristics, and a multi-scale model has been developed to optimize the coating process and reduce the need for experiments. The model predicts and estimates on both device and micro scales, allowing for evaluation of droplet evaporation time and validation of the coating process success.
