A review on three-dimensional stitched composites and their research perspectives

Chenyang Song et al.

Summary: Three-dimensional (3D) stitching technology is an effective method to improve the interlaminar performance of composites, but there is still insufficient information on stitch methods, equipment, and failure mechanisms. This review systematically introduces stitched composites from the aspects of stitching methods, machines, parameters, and mechanical performance.

The translaminar fracture toughness of high-performance polymer fibre composites and their carbon fibre hybrids

Yoran Geboes et al.

Summary: Translaminar fracture toughness is a key property that determines the damage tolerance and notch sensitivity of fibre-reinforced composites. This study found that using PAR and PBO fibers can significantly improve the translaminar fracture toughness of composite materials, while the performance of aramid fiber is lackluster in comparison.

Flexural fatigue properties and failure propagation of 3D stitched composites under 3-point bending loading

Wen Song et al.

Summary: The static flexural strength of 3D stitched composite was lower than 2D laminated composite, but the modulus was higher. The fatigue failure mechanism of 3D stitching composite was dependent on stress levels.

Enhancing the fracture toughness of laminated composites through carbon nanotube belt stitching

Huigai Li et al.

Summary: In this study, unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced plastics laminates were stitched using ultra-thin continuous carbon nanotube (CNT) belts in order to enhance their interlaminar properties, specifically interlaminar fracture toughness. The results showed significant improvements in mode I and mode II interlaminar fracture toughness after CNT belt stitching, attributed to bridge-connections between CNTs and the CNT-resin interface. Additionally, the tensile and bending performance of the laminated composites showed negligible variation after CNT belt stitching.

Influence of stitching on the out-of-plane behavior of composite materials - A mechanistic review

Daniel A. Drake et al.

Summary: Fiber-reinforced polymer composites are widely used in the aerospace industry for their high stiffness and strength-to-weight ratios. However, their interlaminar properties may limit their applicability, leading to the development of through-thickness reinforcement approaches like stitching. Stitching is considered a cost-effective method that significantly impacts the properties of composite materials.

Fully-reversed tension-compression fatigue of 2D and 3D woven polymer matrix composites at elevated temperature

M. B. Ruggles-Wrenn et al.

Summary: The high-temperature tension-compression fatigue behavior of polymer matrix composites with 2D and 3D fiber architectures was examined in this study. The 3D composite showed a higher fatigue limit while the 2D laminated composite displayed slightly better fatigue performance at higher stress levels. Examination of tested specimens revealed extensive delamination in the 2D composite, while the 3D composite showed enhanced delamination resistance.
